Hey Jar reading your post reminded me of when i was in basic training ( boot camp ) i remember we had to take a pack of kit to go sick with not shure if its the same now tho made me chuckle when i read that
I would not take the Danish thing too seriously. There is this strange scandinavian socialism going on where "everyone is a winner"
I was in a International Boulle competition once in Stockholm. We got knocked out first round...and got a medal. "What the hell is this for?" I asked. " A friend of mine told me. "Its so we don't feel bad, everyone is a winner"
I have a feeling there is a little bit of this going on. It will end up being a geedunk medal for them. Get deployed....you get this and this medal. Maybe we're going back to the cold war with medal envy. Hell, remember the Russians. Had a damn junk yard on their chest some of them. Hell we've got the cyber warrior medal now. Whats that for? Ass blisters?
I always laughed at the "National Defense Service Ribbon"!!! I mean, they just about handed it to ya' when they threw the uniform at you. It's stupid. What, they give me a ribbon for fitting into my blues? Either embroid the thing on the coat or stop giving the damn things out.
I got an NDS ribbon for for keeping the Iraqis from laying mines in the Houston ship channel. It was a terrifying mission. I deserved more out of that. Like the Houston Ship Channel Defense Medal with oak leaf clusters and stars or something.
I don't even know where my medals are. I guess someday they will mean something to me. I am confused when I see guys wearing the advertisement on their cap or car. I guess I could get a DV plate on the car. I have the blue card you stick on your rear view mirror.
I have always been a little more proud that got out of the car and walked to the storefront without a cane or anyone looking at me like "poor guy."
But if that's the way some guys have to get through the pain, then I salute them.
Not much about the ribbons we care about is clear cut, let alone medals...count on Personnelist to f*ck it up regardless. If it helps someone get past the stigma at a key point than so be it. If you don't care than you won't care...
if having to receive a medal is going to help get the help we need then i'm all for a medal. receive a ph and get closer to the front of the line and maybe some of us will be saved before it is to late.
I saw and responded to your thread about the Purple Heart. I just wanted to add that if it would actually make a difference I wouldn't have a problem with a change. But sadly, it won't make a difference. I say this having dealt with the VA for more than 40 years. I have a couple of great doctors now, I'm happy about the treatment I get from them. It's luck that I was assigned to be their patients. I hope you get the treatment you need so that it helps you have a better life. Best of Luck.
