Sighs

So... my vet finally saw his psychiatrist after 6 months. This is the only health professional he sees for his PTSD. He is not medicated. The doc saw him for about 30 minutes. I can't imagine that is enough time to talk about anything. When I asked my vet what the doc had to say his only reply was "he says I should travel more". FFS.

The last time he saw him 6 months ago he (apparently - I've never gone with him) told the doc about his anger issues and the doc's advice was "go for a walk when you get angry". FFS.

I feel like this is kinda "off the back of a cereal box" advice for people having a bad day rather than treatment for a serious mental illness.

I bet he's not telling the doc the half of it. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

And he may not be telling you the half of it...It doesn't take 30 minutes to say "go for a walk", especially if there's no meds to discuss.

That doesn't sound like "treatment". 30 minutes every 6 months isn't going to get most people v far, even with the most brilliant p-doc in the country...Is there any chance you could organise an appointment for you two to attend together to discuss additional treatment options?

Hubby care Co-ordinator once told him it was perfectly normal to want to follow someone home and stab them just because they cut you up. He was also told to try gardening.

I've been to a couple of psychiatrist appointments with hubby, a few years ago when he first started medication.

They started with recapping what was in their notes. Then they went through the pre-appointment assessment form hubby had completed. I got the impression no pre work had been done.

Hubby hasn't seen a psychiatrist in three years. His GP referred him to them earlier this year when he was struggling, but without even speaking to him they just told the GP to up his meds.

I know it's different around the world, but I don't see how they can adequately evaluate a person's well-being, and any improvement or otherwise, the way that things are done.

I would love to go along! My first question would be "What is his treatment plan?" - closely followed I suspect by "Do you even have a freaking treatment plan???"

Unfortunately, my vet is very very wary of anything that even smells like "couples or relationship counselling". He went through it with his ex-wife and children and he feels that he was ambushed, that it was a chance for them all to vent on him all their resentment etc and then he was "thrown out the back window like a bag of garbage". It certainly damaged his relationship with his children no end. I have told him I would be happy to go if he would like me to. He's never taken me up on the offer.
