Not saying this bloke isn't a whackadoodle nutjob, and quite frankly I hope he is. Far beats the alternative. But so far as I know terrorists, extremists, zealots, those seeking revenge, and a whole host of others resorting to violence? Don't have a classification under the DSM. Don't have to be crazy to kill people. Lots of perfectly sane neurotypical people do it every day. Granted, crazy might help you sleep at night, but certainly ain't required.

@Friday IDK, I believe that if you kill somebody(not talking about police, armed forces etc) then you have to have a few "loose screws" to cross over the line.

So, for instance, I have had ONE hospitalization in my life- that was 15 years ago or so. I see a therapist of my own free will. I have no criminal record.
I can buy a gun

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I mean, I don't ever want a gun. I don't see a time in the future where I will feel that my own saftey wouldn't be at risk if I owned a gun. Which, means I would not be able to safetly own one. But, it is good to know that if a time comes where I feel that I could safetly own one and it wouldn't be something that would be too easy to terminate my own life then I could get one and learn to use it correctly, properly, and safetly, then I can for my own protection. I am also a single female living alone (or soon alone but currently a almost 76 yr old father and a disabled pain pill addict 56 yr old step mom is still like living alone but they are moving away soon so soon alone again)

But this is political as stricter gun laws and background checks could have prevented this, and countless other shooting incidents, from happening. I am a woman with PTSD who lives alone, survivor of violent crime (yep, guns) and if my condition happens to fall under an umberella of mental illness, then so be it. We would all be safer.

Under Link Removedit is unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution.”

I thought I had seen that somewhere! Maybe I had misunderstood that or still do missunderstand it but I knew there was something in law somewhere like that.

But this is political as stricter gun laws and background checks could have prevented this, and countless other shooting incidents, from happening.

Not necessarily as we already have checks:

Those convicted of crimes of domestic violence

And they missed that. So, guns laws we have TODAY could have prevented this! Could being the operative word here as we do have the black market and if I REALLY wanted to get a gun and shoot up people there is always a way!

Does stricter gun laws prevent or does it just cause more black market sell of guns and much more angrier Americans that wants to carry a gun, like @desiderata310 but now laws are stricter and now, let's say she can't because she has had one hospitalization or because she has PTSD or because she goes to a therapist and/or a PDoc or because [fill in the blank]? And now much more polical fights because now an Amendment right, the right to bare arms, is taken away or at least taken away from a much larger stretch of people. I honestly do not see stricter laws really solving much. But, this gets too far into my polical views which I do not want to get into. Basically, I do not see why this needs to get polical to see someone f*cked up and missed that he had a domestic violence record and that is a big miss. So, someone dropped the ball. Why does that need to get polical?

@lostforgottensoul ...The irony is that the reactive legislation people generally propose in wake of one of these events? Is usually LESS restrictive than the laws which are already in place

It's a shock. I know. Criminals break the law. And not everyone who breaks the law gets caught. Solution? More (less) restrictive laws! :O_o:

Can't legislate stupidity.

Although people have certainly tried.

Why does that need to get polical?

It is my opinion that it IS already is political, and I stand by it, and I do understand my opinion is a strong one. Having a gun aimed at the back of my head proved itself to be a formative experience (and for the record, even if I'd been carrying a firearm it wouldn't have changed the circumstances). It is significant to note, I think, that other first world countries do not share our particular symptom of violence. It is not my intent to prove anyone wrong or get into a heated debate, only to illuminate another side of this issue.

The thing is, they are having to reach very hard to paint this guy in a bad light. He was a foster parent and had background checks and home studies done and was approved by the state to be a foster parent.

No, no it wouldn't. Not in this case. I am not advocating against gun control laws, not at all, but background checks would not have prevented this guy from getting a gun.

He was a foster parent and had background checks and home studies done and was approved by the state to be a foster parent.

Hence the problem...and illustrative of my point that "background checks" or lack thereof, are insufficient. Also, I actually don't see this man in a bad light. What i see is violence spiraling out of control leaving many of us feeling as if we have zero choices. And I see the (over) easiness of attaining firearms and using them to alleviate the pain as a method to further madness.

I must be missing posts on this thread. While I must have misunderstood your post I only saw one post by you at the time I made my reply and I don't see a post by @joeylittle. I do apologize if I have misunderstood you or made you feel that there was a lack of compassion for your experience and I am truly sorry you had to go through something so horrific. As of now I only see two posts by you. I feel like I am missing something.

@Fadeaway You are not missing anything. I thought I could respond to this thread, mentioning my personal experience, and not get triggered. Wrong. My reference to @joeylittle had to do with this. I deleted it.
