@scout86 I too come from farming ppl. Very elderly now but still doing it. My country cut a deal with the US over steel. It seems we will not go unscathed entirely however bc we have no car manufacturer's here and just about everything else comes from somewhere else. We rely on a lot exporting too.
T took the US out of the Trans Pac., Trade Agreement...I think that's what it is called. So, now it's all being re-negotiated without the US in it. Some will benefit from this but most will not. We, from underneath the world will have an advantage in some near Asian countries but not for around the other side. Freight equals lots of $'s. I guess a few big freight carrier's will be smacking their lips with glee. I cannot think of too many other businesses who actually make stuff, will be feeling lucky with Tariff's.
China and the EU are very rattled indeed by these Tariffs and I suspect there is a lot of diplomatic courier's running to and fro with some big questions in their sealed envelopes. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the various US and foreign entities open them up. I think retaliatory action will be coming soon and nobody is going to like it.
Right now T may be fulfilling a promise to his 'heartland' but I agree with you
@scout....wait till they go shopping after the real effects hit the shelves.
Our GDP will undoubtedly drop. I have been watching the stocks rise & drop in the US. Our Banks are heavily invested in your dollar and what it does - as is a lot of the rest of the world. Investor's must have their hands over their mouths from one day to the next. I think protectionism is not a straight arrow or if it is, then it's facing down. :arghh;
Regarding the Wall. I did wonder about ladders, land and water-ways...and my other thought was hooks and rope's...too easy? Doesn't the US have border control points anyway?
I saw T admiring China's Great Wall a while back. He said to a China official, "That's a nice wall". (nice) :hilarious: I thought I was having a 'moment' but it was replayed a number of times. I imagined his mind ticking over with 'my wall is going to be bigger than your wall'... but no we are not in a child care centre sand-pit. Oh well...
I have seen some of the structure 'examples' put forward for discussion and I have to wonder...apart from having to have an army on the US side to stop breaches...the money to build (any of them) - would pay for you all to have a good health plan, education and retirement. Which would benefit everyone... It really is a 'thought bubble' then?
I must admit I worry about all you guys over there. :hug: I hear the term 'leader of the free world' and I'm worried. Big red buttons aside. Btw I am not over the moon with politicians in any country. I do question the motives behind anyone wanting to be a politician...anywhere. I would not be one so that leaves the field very wide doesn't it? Your late night comedians are not short of material now but neither are ours:rolleyes:.. Our pollie's are always digging holes for themselves to climb out of too.
Who will be the next Dem leader when it comes time to step up to the mark? Is there a strong Dem., leader waiting?
And just to add some more variation on your country. I read a really good article on Detroit slowly rising from the ashes of the bankruptcy, racial & social problems that hit it so hard. The population has stopped leaving and it's becoming a different kind of city now. Arts, education and other areas are thriving. Ppl are said to be growing fruit and veggies in abandoned allotments. It hasn't recovered fully but the ppl there are staying and fixing things up...themselves. :)
