One of my favourite sketches in the latex puppet show from the 19 80s, "spitting image"

Was Reagan dipping his grey nasal hairs in 'residential strength grecian 2000

That and the ongoing saga of Reagan's AWOL brain (a brain that was the size of a walnut).

I don't think that dyed (nasal) hair in the white house (or Nancy's plastic surgery) resulted in either plagues of biblical proportions or cats and dogs living together peacefully, back in the 1980s, and both trends had probably reached Austin long before then.

But, yeah
What was surrealist political satire in the 19 80s seems to be all too real and serious now.

I hope you're right, but it sounds like his party is standing by him and they, in theory, have a majority.

I think the fact that they pulled their outside "prosecutor" this afternoon is telling. She more or less seemed to want to get at the truth and I think that's the LAST thing they really wanted.

They only had her for Ford because they didn’t want to make it look like a bunch of men being cruel to a woman.

Seeming to speak to the Democrats in the room now, Sasse said, "You could have handled all this. We could have had this conversation in a private in a way that didn't -- not only do crap to his family...." he then stopped the thought.

"I yield my time."

I wonder what the rest of that thought was.... Sasse is right. They could have handled this privately and sooner. Spared the nation and found a new nominee. I don’t blame the democrats at all. But I’m pretty sure that’s where Sasse was going - to mention that they could have withdrawn this nominee.

Even Kavanaugh testified about how his teaching career is over. Why would he be talking about that he was going to get the nomination?

They are all hinting at what is to come: this nominee not getting confirmed.

From what I heard, they didn't make public if she was going to interview Kavanaugh earlier. Then she started, but they took over themselves. Personally, I take that to be because they wanted to spin the narrative their own way, not look for facts and not really pressure him. Way too much politics and not enough fact finding, as far as I'm concerned. And I'm afraid we're about to get a very accomplished liar on the court. A place he doesn't belong.

I hope I'm wrong! I've about decided that the system is screwed up beyond repair and the rule of law is gone, replaced by a winner take all version of politics.

....I'm glad that I'm busy tomorrow so hopefully the vote won't be on my mind. I'm back on my old phone that has no news feed, so I won't have it pop up in my face.

*nail biter*

Thing is, they are both getting used for political gain. Ford and Kavanaugh. This should have been handled privately and the damn nomination removed and the FBI investigated.

This is 100 percent speculation, but I’m guessing perhaps Amy Coney Barrett will end up being in the running to be nominated for Supreme Court again soon. Super conservative, on the short list, and unlikely to lead to claims of sexual assault being made.

There's no way Kavanaugh is not going to be confirmed. The Republican Senate has already said that. This whole thing today was just a show. That's why there were no witnesses compelled to testify. Kavanaugh said he was willing to have the FBI investigate these allegations if the Senate Chair wanted them to, but when Grasley asked him he requested a break. Right after they came back he said that the written statements were good enough. That alone says something's rotten in this whole affair. I can just imagine Trump saying "Hell no, are you crazy!" There's a reason none of the witnesses will give any kind of interview, or why the other 2 accusers didn't get to testify. Not to mention the fact that yesterday some Republican Senator, I don't remember who, said that" even if these allegations are true that doesn't mean anything." Just goes to show you that this whole thing was a show with no possible affect on the outcome of the vote.

With all the talk about how badly the Anita Hill/ Clarence Thomas hearings were, I have yet to hear anyone mention that, as a result, we ended up with not only a person who was credibly accused of harassing women on the Supreme Court, we ended up with a LIAR on the Supreme Court. We're about to get that again. In this case, we're going to get an extremely partisan liar on the Supreme Court. After his tirade about a vast left wing conspiracy, how can he POSSIBLY be impartial on any case remotely connected to politics? He can't. And that's exactly why he's there.

Our whole system of "government" is becoming progressively less meaningful. There doesn't seem to be anything we, the people, can do about it.

The most telling moment, to me, in Kavanaugh's testimony came with Senator Klobuchar. She was asking him about his drinking, and whether or not there might be periods of times he can't remember because of it. He asked her if SHE had ever been blackout drunk. That's a classic way of avoiding answering a question that I tend to associate with a certain set of pathological people who've been in my life. I don't think it's the TYPICAL way of avoiding answering a question. And it's sure not the way I'd like to see a judge on the Supreme Court answer a question (or not answer a question, for that matter)/
