And, now we have a system where the president can decide to start a war all by himself? I'm no fan of the Iranian government, but I am a fan of "rule of law". If it's ok for the president to decide to assassinate an official from a foreign government all on his own, where does it stop? What ever happened to checks and balances?

In recent months, Iran shot down an American drone, seized oil tankers, and bombed Saudi oil infrastructure. The US did not retaliate or attack them. But when Iran put American lives in danger and violently attacked our Embassy, it was time to strike back — directly.

So far as "starting a war..."rule of law": "Authorization isn’t necessary where a credible near-term threat exists, and that was certainly the case with Soleimani."

"While there is at least one major U.S. covert action program on Iran, the legal notice requirements weren’t triggered by the separate Soleimani killing. That’s because this action was overt and narrowly defined in scope.

More importantly, there is a long tradition of government attorneys, the courts, and Congress deferring to presidents where they deem it necessary to use force to address a serious, near-term threat to U.S. security."

Most notably Obama's numerous drone strikes in the region were not questioned by Democratic representatives. But hey... Orange Man Bad.

This one is the thing that I think makes this latest round of airstrikes so dangerous. Because, on the one hand, Soleimani has orchestrated a lot of the militia and terror group attacks going on, particularly in Iraq, and posed a very obvious and immediate threat to US personnel and assets in the area.

On the other hand? He's considered a bit of a war hero in Iran. Whether or not Iran will tolerate his death by US forces remains to be seen. A nervous wait for all involved.

Iraq has long been the ground for a proxy war between Iran and the US. Syria's on-going conflict is a civil war, and a proxy war with several nations on the ground.

Soleimani was more, much more than a bit of a hero. He was proclaimed "a living martyr" by the Ayatollah. The Qud General was sanctioned by the Obama administration in 2011 for his role in a foiled terror attack on Washington, DC…. but they backed off instead taking the route of appeasement and by ultimately giving 'em pallets of American Taxpayer CASH (hint... terrorists use cash). In fact: "Under Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, Soleimani was to be removed from international sanctions after eight years, though then-Secretary of State John Kerry promised that sanctions against Soleimani would be in place “forever.”

Knowing this Soleimani got reckless in his statements to the US/Trump Administration as he ramped up his campaign in 5 countries to include tweeting an open taunt to the US and he was ramping up another campaign. "Soleimani is our leader" was written on the walls of the US embassy in fact. The embassy event was no "protest".

So comfortable was he with the status granted to him by Obama/John Kerry, that he traveled to Iraq to solidify his plans rather than use other methods of communications. He was the world's number one bad guy and he thought he was protected "forever" by the prior US administration... and funded by cash under the bribe/Nuclear Deal with Iran (which they continued to violate anyways without impunity).

With respect to Iran... who has frankly been "at war" with the US since 1979, there is much much more than is being reported by main stream media. Notably John Kerry has still been active in the region (shadow diplomacy) in spite of no longer being a representative of US government. He's been noticeably silent on the death of Soleimani... so far.

Just the most recent quick search about Kerry's activity... though he's been doing it since at least 2018: Former Sec. of State John Kerry admits using back channel to Iran to salvage nuclear deal

POTUS's 52 F-35's on the runway = "I hold all the cards." (52 cards in a deck.... "The jig is up.")

Iran is trying to get derps to "crowd source" the $80 Million price they set on the President's head. Welcome to the propaganda wars normies. Think about it.

Current events/history is my hobby. I been watching this for 3 decades.

The fact that Iran, either deliberately or as result of poor aim, failed to kill any US personnel. Made it easier to enact a non violent rebuke.

I gotta admit, I'm honestly surprised. I was fully expecting to read about a declaration of war while I was getting ready for work tonight. Hopefully it stays peaceful.
I also hope it doesn't turn out that airliner that went down in Iran was the victim of anti-aircraft fire, though Iran's refusal to release the flight data recorder isn't encouraging.

ETA: I also have to add, what Rose McGowan and Michael Moore did, is nothing short of disgusting.
