There have been a heap of posts in the past with regards to how hard it is to file a claim with our relevant VA's.
In my opinion, they are just one huge medical insurance company.
And when you look at all the phonys out there claiming workers compensation, and the soldiers I have seen trying to claim for injuries they did out of hours at home or some extreme sport, and even the ones trying to claim for a mental problem when they are fine, that's why they put you through the ringer.
And when it comes to PTSD, there are women out there who have been sexually assaulted, and even guys in their childhood which could have deep rooted PTSD which does not come out.
It would be great for a veteran to return home and file a claim and it be instantly accepted, but unfortunately, this is probably the longest conflict that any of our countries have had continual service in. It may not have the highest body count, but I believe the body count for people with psychological injuries would be absolutely huge.
Over here we have numerous 'Acts' of parliament which govern our VA claims. If you served in an operational area or pre 2004, I think, you are accepted under the Veterans Entitlement Act.
Whereas, if you served after 2004, you are under a different act of parliament, the MRCA.
There is also another pre 2004 act, which is called the SRCA. It does your head in trying to understand them and I still don't, but the difference is the entitlements.
I think they introduced the post 2004 act because there were too many veterans returning home all screwed up. That act has less benefits for the veterans. So not only do the get screwed up serving their country, they get screwed again after making their claim.
I was very fortunate to have my PTSD accepted under the VEA which gives me a pension and medical cover, however; someone suggested to get access to some other entitlements I should have my claim recognised under the other ACT. Well, it was denied. Apparently there was insufficient evidence. The statement made by my Sergeant Major over there was not good enough, and the fact that my memories of one operation did not appear until several years later, made them think I was making it up. WTF.
So I feel compassion and empathise for the Nam veterans who have been having problems for all these years and have been in another war, the war with the VA.
Keep going, it will eventually happen. They have to take responsibility for their actions.
The whole point of this post is just to let you know that your respective VA's do care about you, and are like total wankers sometimes. But if every person that filed a claim was sincere we would not have the trouble. And when you think about it, the now have tens of thousands of claims which will have been filed from the last 10 years of conflict, so the waiting line is getting progressively longer.
Finished waffling now
