Hi all,

I'm doing a blog, maybe this could be a thread but I'm new to the whole blogging thing.

Anyways, I really want to open up a PTSD support group for those who are both sufferers and carers for martial artist! I love the martial arts and while it may not have "saved" me...it doesn't take away my passion for it.

Are there any of you guys who like martial arts too? If so what style, how long, etc. and do you think what I'm suggesting is even possible?

Thank you! :)

Hey, Kunoichi!

This may not apply if you're talking about starting a group here or elesewhere online, but maybe it'll interest you anyway.

I'm not a martial artist, but I was actually talking to my T about my interest in starting a support group for PTSD sufferers/carers. She was really supportive of my desire to help and be involved with others who have PTSD, but cautioned me against starting a group. I had no idea that at least in my state, there are a lot of legal issues with it. Apparently here, even if you're just facilitating or arranging a meeting for such a group, you have to be registered with the state as a unlicensed therapist. Go figure. And doing that apparently opens you up to all kinds of potential legal problems, since you are uninsured. I was surprised!

I've wondered if these issues are part of why there seem to be so few support groups - that maybe they only really exist when led/sponsored/sanctioned by a licensed, insured therapist due to legal reasons.

Ooo good point. Didn't realize that....I just think the martial arts benefits so much for just feeling better (relief of stress and what not).

Man...I would like to meet others that are like me who love martial arts and have PTSD. There is such a different aspect training when it comes to that. (I have previously taught abuse victims even when I was in abuse (ironically) and it really helped them to if anything believe they could fight back even though they were still taught to run first and escape.

Man...I'm not sure how I would get around this

I'd start with just asking a T...I would think if anyone would know about legal issues regarding support groups, it'd be a therapist.

Btw, I think it's great that you want to use your talent and experiences to help others :)
