Were you diagnosed with another mental health illness before ptsd?

Gad, agoraphobia, BPD, schizophrenia, bipolar, OCD, depression, but mostmos it was taken away and I'm just left with PTSD, depression and GAD.

Yes, Bipolar. My mother and sister have it also, so it is hereditary. Maybe it makes me more likely to have gotten PTSD, but I would say that the nature of my Traumas and severity of the earlier ones in my life really predate the Bipolar. I just was not diagnosed until later on in life with the PTSD. If I had been sent to a child Psychiatrist, who knows if I would have been diagnosed with PTSD or not. It is possible. My parents knew of my traumas but chose not to get me any professional help. Then again, Psychiatrists were not as common back then as I think they are now I think. The stigma of mental illness was kept strictly within our family. We were told never to tell anyone that my mother had mental illness.

I originally saw the first T because of suicidal ideation. I was diagnosed with GAD. I did not talk about the trauma history. I was determined not to until I ended up curled up in a ball and unable to function. Then it came out--at least some of it did--enough that the T changed my diagnosis to PTSD about 2 years after I had started therapy.

Originally Organic Brain Syndrome. Then Bi Polar. Then PTSD. One doctor even dared try some kind of schitzo-affective type disorder, but when I argued it he backed off saying he made a mistake. It is what it is, reflecting on the myriad instances of being abused and now, recently, not having the lawful authority to prevent it from happening to me again.
