What Did You Eat As A Child?

When I was growing up, food revolved around the main dish, meat. Pork chops, fried chicken, meatloaf, hamburgers, ham, pot roast, etc. and the other major food group potatoes. Potatoes were mashed, baked and fried, with a little sprinkling of lettuce or canned peas and corn on the side. Breakfast was Cheerios and lunch was PTBJ, celery and chips. Pretty normal fare for the 60's and 70's.

My family really thought I was a freak when I became vegetarian and started making dishes from around the world. Have to say my children, husband and I have a much better diet than I did growing up. Also, I never made my children clean their plates, I just ask that if they took something new they took and little to try it. I still remember having the same plate of liver thrust in my face for three days strait at each meal.

The dog liked it! :)

I don't remember my mom ever making us eat everything on our plate. Most of the time, once we were able to, we served ourselves. My grandma would make me eat everything on my plate whenever we were out. She stopped once she saw how green I would get at times. With the amount of food they now put on plates, I can't imagine any child eating everything on their plate at restaurants. At least not in the US.

Into the light, your dinners sounded like ours. That definitely was how everyone ate then. Of course, the food pyramid was different compared to how it is now.

I remember one meal in particular it has always been my favorite and my mom still makes it for me. It's homemade noodles. She actually makes them from scratch and puts them in either a beef or chicken sauce. Its so yummy.

When it was hockey night, my dad would come home earlier from milking cows and prepare his special recipe for noodles. Man were they ever good.

My mom would make homemade fries and hamburgers on Saturdays, the neighbor kids would sometimes come over just to be able to eat some. I would make fries for my brothers and sister Saturday midnight when the horror movies would come on. Imagine the scene, blood on the screen and red ketchup on the fries ! Nothing would stop us.

One of my nannies gave me some kind of thing that I can only describe as similar to mashed potatoes with cheese, but I have no idea what it really was. All I know is that I wish that I could find some of it today as it was delicious! I do eat mashed potatoes with cheese sometimes just to satisfy my need for this most loving meal, which was probably fed to me in my highchair when I was maybe 2-3 or so.

Later on my mother used to make us hamburgers or hot dogs, Polish Sausage, pork chops, chicken or maybe a lamb chop sometimes. With one of these we'd get some boiled potatoes, a vegetable and if we were good, a dessert of ice cream or cheese cake or something. Oh, and there were spaghetti and sausage or meatballs, grilled cheese sandwiches and other good stuff too.

On Sundays we always went out to Italian restaurants. My mom and sis would order lasagna, daddy spaghetti and I ravioli. Then we would get spumoni for dessert or a similar thing called bisque tortoni, which I preferred. I've never tasted anything like it again either, since I've grown up and moved from my home town. I loved it so much. It was an ice cream, but it had some kind of carmelized spicy thing in it too. Ah, the wonderful memories... thanks for asking!
