What To Never Say To A Ptsd Sufferer

I have had PTSD for over 5 years, but only last year finally sought treatment for it. I really didn't know...
Hi Law Dog... I know your story, however I have only been the witness to the effects of the trauma you have suffered .. I am the mother of a Law Dog.... watching the effects this has had on his life has been the the most heartbreaking ordeal I have ever witnessed... his pain is mine.. I feel it as acutely as he does.. That's what mothers do.
My question to you is this... After 5 long years of suffering.. quietly.. isolated in your own private turmoil.. self medicating yourself into oblivion... Feeling isolated and misunderstood, doing whatever it takes to escape the pain...
What was it that made you finally recognize you were entitled to live a "happy".. meaningful life?
What started the turn around for you..??
What helped you trust the treatment and motivated you to push through the pain... ?
What words can I use to encourage my son.. my only son.. to live.

My dad replied with:

"You're the one that decided to stay."
- Yes, because he was the only person giving me the love and attention I was so starved of when I was fourteen.

"It could've been a lot worse. At least he didn't rape you."
- Mm. Thanks, Dad.

"It's not really that bad though, is it?"
- See previous reply.

"I'm sure it's nothing different to what you do now!"
- Yes father, because there's no difference between being forced to perform sex acts on an adult whilst underage and me engaging in loving sex acts with my long-term partner when both parties are consenting adults.

But what was my problem? I agreed every time! Yes, I'm an idiot for staying, it's my fault. Oh, it could've been far worse. It wasn't really that bad. *Slams head against wall*

Ones I've had recently:

'Well you'll just have to put it out of your mind and concentrate' - fellow med student

'I thought you'd gotten over that' - my mum

'It's just an ex boyfriend trying to contact you' - my dad

'Is your counsellor not very good?' - my mum

'Just put it behind you' - several people

'Just don't think about it' -several people

You don't have PTSD from that little surgery or that little scar. Or should I remind you 5 scars and one in the arm from the IV. Your stupid, find work so I can screw up again. Someone you knew grew up with you and he doesn't remember no surgery.

1. You don't act like you had a brain injury. You can do (fill in the blank)
2. You seem so normal. Are you sure you have PTSD? It can't be that bad.
3. It happened so many years ago. Let it go.
4. Just go sleep it off. (National Suicide Prevention Hotline)
