General Why Supporter Discussion

I remembered the post about someone feeling like they were an invalid.
Here in Australia, most partners of veterans with PTSD are classed as Carers. There is nothing wrong with that. They do care for the veteran.
I remember when I was first diagnosed. My son was my carer and classed as a 'Child Carer'. He made sure I was taking my medication, he did extra jobs around the house, he made sure I was eating.

So my question is why change the name from Carer and Family discussion to supporter. When I move in and live with Margaret and eventually marry her, she will be my carer.

It does have negative connotations for a lot of people that it indicates that we all need "care" rather than "support". Its one of those technical renames that people always do I suppose.

I know what your saying but over here we have some veterans who are so bombed up on their medications that they need a carer. And there are others who are refusing medication that cannot even remember what their names are.
I still get days where I cannot concentrate or might be a danger on the road. I just don't go out.
Its six of one, half a dozen of the other. I just wanted to have my say. I suppose 'Supporter is alright'. Maybe they can change it to 'Supporter and Carer and Family Discussion' lmao

I like carer because it covers one who cares for me and one who takes care of me to what ever level is needed. Supporter sounds more distant like I pay child support but I am only with my two kids two weekends a month four days out of say 30 I am definetally not there carer I make the best I can of those four days and wish I had more . I need my carer's help more than four days a month and I need her to care because I forget my meds I can't drive all the time and she keep my children well taken care of which takes away a lot of stress. Hell what differance does it make if your confident in your position call yourself what you want. Wether you are a sufferer or a person impacted by it no one name can cover it all. Hell I hate being called a ptsd sufferer but you gotta call it like it is and I can't argue. Wether you care with feelings or physical help while you are doing it you are a carer. It's great to have carers even when you don't think you need them because most of us know when we are left to go it alone we usually end up in a messed up pile of shit with a hangover.

I too like the word "carer". Maybe we need that here in the US...or do we already have this. I would say that my wife has been a great carer....
