You Know You Have PTSD When...

... when you find you have a strong opinion on the use of the word "trigger" in popular culture.
Definitely. It bothers me the way it is thrown around these days. A lot of the ones I hear use it have no idea what a real "trigger" can do to a person.
<chuckling> Do to a person? Either create a loud noise, or punch a hole, depending on the aim of the person pulling the trigger.

Psych BORROWS the word trigger, because medicine ALSO does, to describe an unstoppable process once started. Like ejaculation is triggered by the prostate, creating a glandular cascade, which cannot be stopped.

Ironically? PTSD triggers CAN be stopped. Either all Matrix-Like in slowing the round so you can dodge, or by removing the firing pin, so the trigger can pull all damn day, and do jack shit. PTSD is pretty unique in that regard, Psych triggers (in other disorders) are usually unstoppable & irreversible.

^^^ I get totally irked by pop cultures use, too. 😉 Hence the actual backtrace of where/why we got the word, and reasons it’s not really a good one for PTSD, since we can matrix-up or get mechanical & ditch the firing pin. ^^[
