The father of a former Stanford University athlete convicted on multiple charges of sexual assault has said his son should not have to go to prison for “20 minutes of action”.

Brock Turner, a former swimmer at Stanford University, was on Thursday sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and probation for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.

The 20-year-old from Dayton, Ohio – who was convicted of three felonies, including assault with intent to rape – faced a maximum of 14 years in prison.
…..
Her victim impact statement – released by the district attorney’s office andpublished in full by Palo Alto Online, among others – has received global attention for shedding light on what advocates say is an epidemic of violence on college campuses. On BuzzFeed, it has been viewed more than 4m times since being published on Saturday.
……

Michele Dauber, a professor of law at Stanford University, tweeted an excerpt from the probation pre-sentencing report in which Dan Turner said his son’s life had “been deeply altered forever”.

“He will never be his happy go lucky self with that easy going personality and welcoming smile,” he wrote of his son. “His every waking minute is consumed with worry, anxiety, fear, and depression. You can see this in his face, the way he walks, his weakened voice, his lack of appetite.”

His statement was met with fury on social media, with many condemning its tone.

I am sickened by the entire thing -- everything from the backlash to the father's statement to the obvious lack of remorse. It's not like it was a bad decision like getting a tattoo while drunk -- it was a violent, horrible crime.

I do have to say how proud I am of the victim reading her statement in court. Powerful, and powerfully written.

Only five years for attempted rape???? Even 14 is too little. Those of us who have been raped face a lifetime of consequences from what others have done to us. Plus, anyone who can do it once I think can do it again, is a menace to society, and needs to be kept in prison.

The father's statement? I can't even go there. I refuse to let myself get riled up, can't afford it at the moment.

Eve . . . I totally understand your sentiments, but we do have to be civilized, even if one of our major candidates is not.
I truly hope you take this in the spirit in which it is intended. You KNOW I totally agree with you, but we can't go over to the bad side. That woild be bad for everyone. We've just got to do what we can, and if the worst happens, well, we'll figure out a way to deal with it.

@hodge

I have no idea what you're saying.

I commented on how 20 minutes means nothing.

I then commented on how I can see why people nominated an entitled person because they are entitled themselves.

Nothing I said was uncivilized. Are you sure you're not reading too much into what I said?

Eve, I'm so sorry I must not have made myself clear in my message!! You must know by now that you and I are friends in political sympathy with one another. I was only referring to the nuke part of your comment. I didn't even take that very seriously as I feel you are such a compassionate person. I was just responding off the cuff, as it were. I think the Trump factor is quite wide reaching in ways expected and unexpected. Let's not let it bring us apart.

The nuke comment wasn't in relation to the trump comment.

I was saying that the 20 minute thing was a pointless defense as with enough nukes and access to the "go" buttons, most of humanity could be wiped out in 20 minutes. (In theory. I have no idea how many people pushing how many buttons in how many locations it truly takes to set off one of them.)

Pause.

Break.

Separate thought.

I then commented on how Trump was probably (most definitely) given a boost by voters who feel entitled.

I was not advocating nuking the world. My nuke comment had nothing to do with Trump.

This is as clear as I can make my statements.
