Cost Of Therapy

$650 per month for two sessions a week- one is 60 minutes, one is 30 minutes, plus unlimited writing back and forth. Out of pocket, online therapy.

- Call insurance company & get your psych & out-patient benefits (including requirements, like licensure, & deductibles) for in & out of network providers, along with appropriate billing paperwork & codes sent to you. Explain that you'll need to be billing them as a provider doesn't provide billing as a courtesy and they usually send you a whole packet, along with very detailed instructions and a whole lot of extra forms, instead of expecting you to photocopy a single form.
- At each appointment have your provider signature the billing code, and give receipt of payment.
- Bill your insurance company. ((Most have minimums, like 6-12 sessions need to be billed at once, some allow single sessions to be updated online. Depends on the insurance company)).
- Wait an avg of 3-6mo for reimbursement check or direct deposit.

So this is interesting and something I can look into thank you. I have a deductible I think it is like 4,000 or something like that and then they reimburse 80% after you reach your deductible.
I also get 1,400 which would be 120.00 3x per week over a course of 4 weeks (1 Month)

Mine works on a sliding scale for clients with no Heath insurance (such as myself) and I'm very grateful she does. I'm paying &50-60 depending on what I can afford that week.

Need to start looking into health insurance...

Over the past 4.5yrs, I've spent anywhere between $20-$100 a session. Depending on the policy we have at the time and if my provider was in/out of network and our deductible.

When I first started seeing him, he was out-network and my copay was $40, And we had no deductible. Years later, he was in-network.....high deductible policy and I had to pay the first $1,200 up front and then $20/visit.

Now....$600(6 visits to satisfy) deductible, $22/visit there after.....

His rate started at $100/hr and now he charges $125/hr, but he still sees me at the $100/hr rate since that is what I started with.

The Psychiatrist is a new provider for me and right now, my co-insurance runs between $36-$46/ visit.

I've paid out of pocket as much as 250/session (for a combination psych-therapist in a major metro area). My insurance ultimately declined to reimburse it even in part.

I also went out of pocket 200/session with a classical psychoanalyst for a few months, and was stuck with her for a bit, as she wouldn't 'allow' me to quit (and I was too afraid to just quit. Sigh)

My basic set-up for the last few years has been a 25$ co-pay for psych, generally once a week, sometimes once/two weeks if everything is stable, and $75 copay for therapy - but my deductible is quite low, so those drop to zero generally by April every calendar year.

Thankfully, hospital and PHP were covered 100%.

Hi All,

Just wondering how much or how little people spend on therapy. Mental Health care in the US qui...
Hi, Lotis
I'm in the same boat with you--right now. Just as I found someone who would work with me, my insurance changed-again. I now have no insurance coverage and no T.
I found that by going to "goodtherapy.org" , I was able to pick out some people that I thought might work. I sent them each a email and simply asked if they "work on a sliding scale". Some of them sent back a note that they can't and some asked me how much I could afford. I think that I might have someone picked out, but, I won't know till I meet her.

The notes are easy to send (and no cost!) and don't need to be more that the sentence of "do you work on a sliding scale".

Good luck to you.
