Yoga Therapy?

At the counseling center that I go to, there is a yoga therapy group that I am considering. I know that Yoga can be very beneficial for managing C-PTSD & was just wondering if any of you had ever tried it, or had any success with it. :)

My body hates yoga. I grew up doing dance & gymnastics, which loosens & strengthens the opposite sets of connective tissue & muscles that yoga does. (Flexibility & Strength in Motion vs. Flexibility & Strength while Stationary). Tends to be phenom for runners & cyclists & other "tight" sports, but people from flexible sports should be very careful. Especially if the flexibility was trained from childhood. The shorthand of which being that every time I forget this and try doing yoga I seriously injure myself. Dislocations hurt like a sonnuvabitch, the recovery time is obnoxious, and even worse if/as sometimes dislocated joints lead to serious rips and tears that need surgical fixing. So, Nope! No yoga for me!!!

Same principles in motion, however? Love.

I wouldn't call it therapy, but I go to a weekly Yoga for Depression and Anxiety group, as part of my treatment. The yoga teacher is an LCSW who is part of the "adult team" in the psychiatry department. She's excellent, very skillful, compassionate, and intuitive. I love the class, but it is challenging. Some poses are very triggering, and the hypervig always kicks in at the end when i'm supposed to be resting. But I love love love it! It keeps me connected to my body, and is part of the in vivo exposure homework that I do as part of Prolonged Exposure therapy with my psychologist.

Really? I did gymnastics and have no problem with it. But I was very flexible. Like, do splits up a wall flexible. My problem now is I do weights too much and it makes my hamstrings tight

Thanks for the responses! I've only done yoga once in a class. Years ago my boss paid for someone to come in for several weeks & teach a class to the staff. I remember I cried during the class & had no idea why. Probably because I CAN'T relax!

I do yoga, but mine is done at home with videos or my yoga books so there's no added stress of others around me (other than my hubby, lol). Also if something hurts, there should always be ways to adjust the pose to each person as yoga isn't supposed to be painful. I have sublaxity of all of my joints and I was told by my doctor that yoga was good for me. It's not only about stretching, it's also about strengthening. I hope it works for you. ;)
