I was robbed at gunpoint on Thursday morning. I am a bank officer and it was only myself, one young teller, and another employee who was never seen by the robber because she hid in her office. He jumped the counter and pointed the gun in my tellers face and forced him to open his drawer. His back was turned to me and I instinctually went for my alarm. He saw me and wheeled around with the gun at my head and started screaming at me not to touch a thing. He finally took the money and fled. I am still so terrified. I felt elated at first that I wasn't dead and my coworker was ok. Now I feel anxious, obsessively going over everything in my mind over and over. I'm jumpy and irritable all the time. Is this normal??? I feel like I'm losing my mind. Thanks in advance for anyone who has shared any kind of similiar situation and can help.

Is this normal???
I think it's pretty normal, under the circumstances.

The good news is, not everyone who experiences a traumatic event ends up with PTSD. A minority of people do, in fact. So there's a good chance that this will get better with time. It wouldn't hurt to find a good, experienced professional to discuss all of this with, if it seems like that would help. From what I'm told, talking about it is good.

Glad you all came through that in one piece!

I haven't had this particular thing happen..
But am going to suggest you find a good Therapist to talk this out with.
It is traumatic to have a gun in your face and yes what your Feeling and experiencing is normal. The sooner you get help to process it the better you will be.
Glad you reached out.
And very glad everyone is safe.

Oftentimes your training kicks in first and then later when the mind decides you are safe, all the adrenaline rushes in. My experience anyway. Not a pleasant feeling. Glad everyone is safe!

If memory serves me, I think the turnaround time is around 14 days. If your symptoms get worse & you are not sleeping, that's the time they used to give us to get help back in the 70's & 80's. This is a traumatic experience & the FDIC used to have counseling sessions for their workers to get them ready for robbery events. Looks like times have changed & no one is assisting the victims! If you have an HR person, maybe they can refer you for crisis counseling. I can assure you that the next time you are robbed at gun point, it will be different, yet very much the same! The $ is insured & easily replaced. Your life is insured, yet difficult to replace once it is altered. Only you can decide if it's worth the risk of being a hero in the workplace. I doubt they will give you a raise or a reward! Happy to hear no one was physically hurt.

Yes, agreed, seek a therapist right away, before it can turn into PTSD. Sometimes there is enough time, but sometimes there is not enough time. The sooner you seek help the better it will be for you.

What are you even doing on this thread? You have no idea what you are talking about. Grow up and quit acting like a child trying to get attention by saying ignorant, shocking comments. Pathetic.
