Anxiety about potential tonsillectomy!?

I have mentioned it in chat before with a few people, but I figured I'd start a thread and kind of discuss it here, especially now that I have more information.

In the past three months, I have had strep throat 3 times. I have just finished my medication for the third go. I was referred through my doctor to see a specialist about it, and see about maybe having my tonsils out. That alone was causing me to panic, but after talking to people here I was starting to calm down about it.

Today, I received the call and my appointment is booked, and it's next week. Now I feel like I'm starting over with the panic I had about the whole situation, but now it's so much worse.
It really doesn't help that my (pretty much) mother in law was telling me not long ago (before my throat issues) about how she had her tonsils out when she was 25, and how horrible it was, and all that fun stuff. Now, I know it's harder on your body the older you are when you get the surgery, but I'm hoping it's not too bad.

Has anyone had the surgery as an adult? Or can anyone offer advice?
Would love to hear peoples' stories and advice, hopefully it'll help me as best as I can to cope with what could happen.

Believe your mother in law. Having your tonsils out when in adulthood isn't fun. Actually having them out at any age isn't fun. At 5 yrs old, my daughter almost died. She had to have 2 more operations in 9 days to stop the bleeding. She had the last rights, and was baptized before the last surgery.

I suggest lots of popsicles, ice cream and cold drinks.... oh and pain pills.... good luck! The pain only last for a few days!!!!

Thank you! My daughter has hers out as well, when she was 4. She had complications with bleeding as well, and she was admitted back to the hospital, but luckily after a couple days we were home again.

Come to think of it, maybe that's adding to my anxiety about it as well?

I hope my anxiety doesn't increase. I don't even know for sure if they're coming out. According to my doctor, there's a high chance they will be, but nothing is for sure until I see the specialist.
