My parents are of mixed marrage. Fathers was Loyalists and mom's was Provos. I watched a distant cousin once mix a slurry bomb in the bucket of a front end loader. I was 8....Ive seen the other side of the family get ready for an orange parade with brass knuckels and baseball bats.
I decided a long time ago not to get involved with either cause. The cost was too much and the sides were so blurred and similar. Hate was the calling card they both carried.
Anyone posting or advocating violence against innocent people is doing wrong in my book. Hate is Hate no matter the name or cause.
I like Angle a lot as a guy in here. I think he understands me a lot and at times I felt he has had my back when it was needed. I am not trying to stir the pot here. There are so many songs that dont promote hate and all the crap that comes with it. Why even go there?

One of the bad things we all have in common or had is hate. It is part of the Beast. It is hard to let go. Especially if friends were killed. Generally we all keep it in check or redirect it in a positive way.

Yesterday I did not keep it in check. I told an American woman at the Opera House that the place was a huge waste of tax payers money and a complete f*ck up as it was falling apart already......while her idiot husband acted like a stupid tourist for the Norwegian media there. The look on her face was great though. It looked like I took a dookie in her purse. "Oh you are so negative". I can't tolerate ignorance.

This song is not directed to the woman on this site. I think you know the people that are talked about in this song though. You meet them everyday.

................. can't understand you putting up loyalist crap in a neutral website like this.
I thought better of you... I thought you were a better person.

You know what red cocker. the troubles were/are a bad time in English and Irish history. the whole thing never should have gone that far or gotten that much out of control.

A lot of Inocent peopel died for no reason on both sides. At the begining we were there to help protect the Catholics from the Protostants, which we did, right uptill the point where an Inocent child died because of a British Army round. From that point on the Provos labeled the British Army Loyalist Irish supporters hell bent on killing the Catholics in Northern Ireland and the shooting season was declared open.

tit for tat is never going to be a good way to be seen as doing a good job. The only good thing that came out of all the troubles is the fact that the British Army learnt a lot about Insergency, Anti Terrorist warfare and had a combat training area on its front door that taught us to servive.

I realy do get what the Provos wanted, what most Catholics wanted, the British Government of the day had different ideas. All Irish wanted was their country back! Shit I would do the same in my own country if someone decided to send an army to control the land. I think most of us would.

The biggest thing though is the fact, that its where a lot of British Squaddies cut our teeth so to speak. My generation and the few before paid with a lot of our own blood and sweat on that sacred ground, a lot of us lost our inocence and a big chunk of our self on the streets of Belfast or the fields of Armagh. That chunk, that piece of us that can never be fixed or replaced was lost for ever out there.

I just hoped that after all this time and sitting at tables a lot of the issues were finished with, what with the peace treaty and all, letting the Provos out of prison, Water under the bridge, move on and build a land to be proud of. I know it hit me hard when I first heard about it all in the papers and on the news, (Disrespecting the brothers who didn`t make it back from the Green Isle) but I guess that is how we learn and move on. And then this week its back in the news that something from 40 years ago is being opened up.

Yes there should be an inquiry as to what happened and why (but an Independant inquiry), the families on both side deserve closure after so long. But wanting the guys that were on the ground to face charges of murder! imho is the typical Provo way to keep stiring the pot. We held our hands up and said "Ok this ain`t working, we need another plan" we let them out of prison, we took all the charges for murder that were still open and closed them, we handed over the names of our informants and our inside men and even those that done a lot of our dirty work. What else do they want?

Back then we weren`t the Army we are today, we dealt with things a lot differently, but we made the best of a shit situation. And I honestly believe that we tried to do right by all. which was our (the grunt on the ground) short coming. We (the grunt on the ground) never got to see the big picture, we beat the streets and paid a high price, and a lot of us are paying even today for doing what we thought was right in protecting the Catholic community aswell as the Protestant one.

Very few people praise the British Squaddies that saved Catholics and Prods alike from the pipe and nail bombs the Provos and Loyalists planted that would kill there own? That is a side that gets forgotten about all to often on the otherside of the wire.

But I sincerely hope the British Government, pick up the bill, and don`t offer our brothers to the slaughter. It isn`t right and I stand my ground on that.

As for the Vid. Yes you are right cocker, it doesn`t belong on here. I am fully aware there are a lot of people in the US, Canada and down under that have Irish routes. It was insensative to those of you on here that celebrate where you come from. It wasnt meant to offend any of the Brothers and Sisters on here and for that I appologise.

Unfortunatly though, the only people who have ever had an insight into the troubles in Northern Ireland are those that have been there. The stories that get past on from one generation to another get distorted, changed and bastardised, and usualy only ever tell one side of the story. I have never seen or been to another Combat theatre that comes close to being anything like it. Let alone the Psych that was part of living in England and on Military Bases on mainland Europe at the time aswell.

I spent my life as a Kid, (since I can remember), checking under the car to see it wasn`t bomb just to go to the shops for a loaf of bread, trying not to be military so as not be a target and the grand age of 11 or so. Never being able to play on the Estates where we lived for fear of a nail bomb in a dustbin. I (like many others) was a kid who didn`t choose to be a Military child, but was none the less classed as a legitemate target by the Provos. I spent more time as a kid checking my 6 than I ever did while serving.

Having people say, the British Military was at fault and was in the wrong just doesn`t wash with me. The Provo,s the Catholic and Prod families who bricked those trying to bring peace, who taught their children hate because they knew we wouldn`t retaliate to children, and Para Militaries. We were all at fault.

It is about time all sides stood up and said, "OK we f*cked up, lets start from scratch" instead of one side allways bringing something up. The country is f*cked up as it is.

Do I have a problem with the Irish? Yes I do. But I can sing the Provo songs as good as the Loyalist and do have a big collection both. And I still listen to them all because they tell the story of a big part of my life.

Just times like this bring out the beast (no that isn`t an excuse). Bad day, bad Idea bad Post.

ok something to bring it all together... I am Cajun on my mom's side... we were killed or exiled from France to Canada in about 1645 for being Catholic... In 1755 we were again routed and expelled to Louisiana... those that put up a fight were killed... both times for religion and politics (and yes this is not as recent as what yall are talking about, I think you both understand tho) Dad's side? immigrated to France from Belgium, some of the same protestants that kicked my mom's family out or killed them... on the other side of Dad's family were the British... and yes. they were in Acadia way back then.. neither time do we know if they were part of it but they were part of the movement..

Odd combination no? Maybe one day some years down the road the same can be said in Northern Ireland.. anyway... enough postulating.. a decent Cajun song...

the fringe benefits of being kicked out of everywhere we lived pretty much... we went forth and multiplied.. you can see the Spanish/American Indian genes in us..

And bonus you get to see a little of the area I grew up in... loooove the airboats...
