I try to avoid shooting bears whenever possible. They are like roving clean-up crews. If the bear is acting aggressively towards me or my dogs, it will get the 7mm magnum treatment. If the bear is minding his own business he gets a "free pass". No sense in killing just for the sake of killing...

No point in shooting what you can't eat in my book. I had half a dozen run in with wild bears over the years, and always I was more fascinated than bloodthirsty or fearful. Porcupines, fishers, mink and owls fascinate me even more.

Sarg you may have one in mind but if you go looking for a decent tele for wildlife would be more than happy to give recommendations....

I mostly do portrait and pet portrait photography but after reading this I think it might be a good prescription for me...

I agree. I good long hike, lunch on a stump and hopefully some bad-assed photographs could possibly fix one up right. Being trapped here in Nebraska however, I may have to travel a bit to find anything but corn and these pitifully ill suburban deer.

I could spit onto the flight line from my old house. Thankfully, I was never unlucky enough to be stationed there. My "new" house however, is a block away from the main base air search RADAR so that at night I can bask in the warm red glow of the navigational warning lights on the tower.

Once you get on, you never get Offutt.


On the plus side, we have Stella's burger pub, and ya'll don't. Just sayin'...

lol I left the Gulf, flew to Rome... from rome a chartered DC 10.... it was about 98 when we left in our summer uniforms. We drink the liquor stock dry. I wake up to the sound of the gear lowering.... Gander NF in later November, we have to debark the plane wearing our summer uniforms... Stand on a runway for 45 min with 16 foot snow drifts on each side, good 30kt winds... about 15 deg....

That was all the Gander I could stand lol....

But ohhhh speaking of photography... would love to go back to NF in summer with my camera....

Now that is an idea! Actually I was TDYed to Offutt AFB on a "jointness" program. Wanted miltary intel to work with AF intel. And of course we did -- mostly in the "O Club"...

I was stationed at Offutt from 2000 to 2006 doing mostly things I can't talk about...:(

I've been to Alaska in winter and its cold, but Offut in January is crazy cold...just sayin
