i have been prescribed citalopram from my doctor.

Welcome Duff. Sleep is an elusive thing for many on here. Unfortunately, most of the really effective meds for sleep are addictive. Many of us us Mirtazapine, which is also an anti-depressant. Taken at bedtime it helps with sleep. Also effective are meditation, evening walks with the dogs (if you have one), reducing alcohol & tobacco, etc. Try searching around this forum. You'll find lots of interesting posts, many of which will apply to you. Good luck.

Welcome FW! I see you were in Basra in 07...me too...served from Aug 2006 to Sept 2007, my first of two OIF tours. It was hell and the major source of my PTSD. Anyway, welcome to the forum. It is a great place with great people.

Hello Duff. Citalopram is what my GP prescribed me. He knew what he was doing. It helped bring all the noise and revs and over-reaction back down from red-line to a level where I could start to manage myself and my reactions etc. constructively.
And that is a very important part of getting on top of it, implementing your own tactics and work-arounds.
Combat Stress actually did me some good because it was an ex-RM doc who saw me, gave a sensible diagnosis and suggested a few things that would work for my particular f*ck-ups. I also had some totally useless visits but swings & roundabouts 'n all that.
Hardest part is deciding that there is a problem and addressing it, well you've done that.
I was shit-scared that opening up and admitting the problem would brand me with some sort of stigma and that would be that.
Didn't happen. For a start a lot of the people I work with are all too aware of the issue, secondly I've had a lot of respect for grasping the nettle and cracking on. I'm lucky I know but don't shy away from getting all the help you can to beat the bastard.
Fingers crossed, duff.

Welcome Duff. Glad to see you found this site. Lot of good people and reading.
If your having nightmares there are drugs you can get to help with that. Sleep is a battle for most of us and I don't think that changes regardless of how far along you are in sorting yourself out.

Things can get better you know. Not all roses but you can learn to control the stressors in life and that can help reduce what your feeling all the time. The guys are right the first steps are to try to avoid the booze and drugs. They only mess things up further.

Are you seeing a therapist? Can you get in front of one? It can help out a lot if you can. Talking out the crap is the best medicine in the world. Anyway, glad you made it home mate.
