Hands down if I would have been the age to serve in Vietnam--- I would have. Thanks for fighting that war to all that did

The C-130's would drop these flares; they were the size of a 5gal bucket. It would light up as far as you could see like it was day time. Then they would target they're objective and fire. It was just a stream of orange death. I always hoped they didn't get their coordinates wrong.

Still the VC or NVA would shoot back at the ship; personally, I'd have been hiding under the nearest rock.

I appreciate your thanks 19K30. But I have to say now looking back it was a total waste of men and the time we spent in hell there. It didn't prove a thing or make anything at all better. Just screwed up politics.

but the Military Industrial complex was probably happy

We were the test bed for the starlight scope used on the Specters. We could get 20 a night but needed fighters and bombers to take them out. The flares we dropped as well. They were 3 mil. candle for 3 min. We could just about keep an area lit for most the night. They closed us out in 69' and I think they moved the Specters out in 70' or so, lost two and two was too much.

The Specters, or Talons as they are known today are a hell of a platform. Especially with 155mm sticking out the left side.

Our group flew RC-130 missions all over but in my day it was focused on central America out of Panama. Flew C-130s several times. I liked it usually, seemed like the closest I could get to a B-17 or B-24 mission.
