High functioning with ptsd/cptsd

Ah, k..... yes it did give me areas and insights to focus on... and some of the other tests like the character strengths and a couple others were kinda validating and there were a few pleasant surprises in there. I though did want to pit myself against a general population and see how I stacked up so that I could zero in on some areas and do some goal/challenges to bump them into some improvement. I was able to do that and it was a good resource for me.

@intothelight Thanks I did end up taking a few. They weren't so helpful for me, but i def can see how it can be useful info for others. I can see it being useful for me later on when I'm further along in my recovery and more... refining my traits place, whereas now I'm still kinda a 'focusing on trauma' llama.

Also, I'm gonna give myself some credit. I'm gonna label myself mid road functioning rn instead of low. I get up, i do self care, i can go out, shop, speak to pple, i'm not depressed, I'm doing some activities/hobbies, connecting a bit better, working hard on my trauma. So in my eyes that's not low functioning. When I'm my definition of low functioning, I can barely get out of bed or do anything. Avoiding everyone. My main reason for not considering myself high functioning is not currently having a job. As soon as I have one, I'll consider myself high functioning.

Where in society does having a job equate to high functioning or functioning at all. I know that we all use this word to some degree, but I find it insulting and negative to a lot people also. @Beans won't consider herself high functioning until she has a job!?!?!? I find this ridiculous, because she is functioning. So why do we have to put labels, high, low, medium???? It just makes me crazy, that people keep trying to strive for a label. And IMO, that's all it is!!!!

End of rant, steps off soapbox. Runs away sheepishly.....

Lmao, but the thing is it's not a problem. It's how i'd label myself in comparison to myself. No one else. It's giving myself credit, seeing where I've come from. By my definition I am not high functioning. Functioning? Yes. High? Nope. Maybe by your definition I am, but def not by mine and that's all ok. I think if pple are still in beating self up mode this is a problem. It's not at all for me- in fact i'll say i'm 3.79233333333333333 functioning on a scale from 1-5 lol. Nbd! :roflmao::roflmao:

Ok, example...... @anthony doesn't work/job. But he maintains this forum, he does carpentry work, he takes care of two pups, he's married, he's brilliant as far as researching and understanding PTSD. Those are just some of the things I can think of right now... He doesn't have a job, does this make him LOW FUNCTIONING????????? NO!!!!!!!!

I just don't understand why people keep thinking that a job, will make them high functioning. It's nuts!!!

Sorry for lmao, I can't edit it. Just in case anyone takes it instead of me laughing at the topic.

@She Cat I can consider work high functioning bc it's my defintion for myself. It doesn't have to be yours. Def don't consider job high functioning if you don't think it is. This is not an objective measure at all. Hmmm maybe that's all the confusion. It's talking about outward functioning so it's kind of objective, but it's not really objective as everyone will have different definitions of their personal functioning.

@Beans So if you fail to get a job, will you be depressed about this and consider yourself a failure? I have a job, I clean other people's f*cking houses. It's a job I can work at because I don't have to deal with people for 8 hours a day. I still have symptoms, depression, anxiety, sometimes panic, anger, some flashbacks. So should. Consider myself low or high functioning????

I understand for you it's a personal goal to have a job, I just don't think it should be equated with being high functioning!!! I think that's setting some people up for failure because they will never be capable of a job. Or those that choose to stay home, do they now feel less than?????

@She Cat - how is what YOU think any more valuable than what Beans and I think? If you don't think it should be equated with high functioning then so be it. Up thread it's not noted anywhere in the PERMA or GRIT material I posted. What you going off at Beans for?

How should you consider yourself? High or low functioning? Use your own measuring stick. Each individual should. Can we bring this back to Deb's topic please?
