I am finding EMDR to be so helpful in my healing process and to helping me understand my self sabotaging behaviors. Why and how? If done right, (and don't expect immediate results) and whith the right therapist whom you trust, EMDR can help you to release and express emotions. Often times, emotions you didn't even know you had about certain traumas in your life. When you acknowledge these emotions, you then start to realize how much pain you are actually in and have and then you start saying to yourself, holy crap! How did I survive all those years or how did I survive that trauma. Then the tears start coming, the cathartic healing tears. Now you understand why you may hurt yourself or even feel hatred towards yourself. Because you are in so much pain but didn't even realize before how much pain you have endured. So now you can have more self compassion and stop blaming yourself and start to take the steps you need to pull yourself out of the hole you are in.
This has been my personal experience with EMDR. =)

Thank you, saraemerald. What a positive post about EMDR. I am to start this very soon. I have been trying to wrap my head around it. In one paragraph you were able to explain it in a way I can grasp without making me feel a bit uneasy or even scared about it. Do I want to cry or show emotions...uh...no. But, I am willing to give this therapy a try. If crying happens I will just have to deal with it. Thanks for sharing.

So with a lot of out traumas, a lot of us cope by becoming very judgemental and analytical and too much in our head. In a non-evasive way EMDR helps you to get out of your head and into your body and that way, you can tap into your feelings.

Thank you so much @ladee. It's been quite a rough road but I am turning a corner now. And no more self blame. I am realizing I had a lot of self blame and self hatred leaving that rediculous cult because the belief system had caused me to think something was wrong with me and that I was leaving God himself, etc, because as you know, the cult teaches it's followers they are nothing without the org and if you leave, you will have no where to go and all the other fear and guilt mongering they do. It's so unfair and I still don't understand what the higher ups in that cult get out of this all besides money.

You don't have to understand anything to do with them. You are out of it. Starting on a new life. Getting the parts of you , you left behind. Try not to get stuck again in a mindset of 'figuring out' what they do or why... Has nothing to do with your 'here and now life'... just celebrate that you are learning how to heal.... that's all that matters..

Happy you have turned a corner.... keep on keepin' on... it gets so much better.. tender hugs.
