Service dog handler lobby

Service dog and Florida summer heat questions. And I might be highly over thinking this. But...I ask anyway.

Ok, so it's 85 today but feels 100. Welcome to summer in Florida. So, first I use a sun shade in the car front windoe. That's a no brainer but the car still gets boiling. At least 100 degrees if not hotter. I want those baby shades but I am so scared it's going to obstruct my few too much. At least in the back and that's the biggest source of sun on Chopper. It's a 2 door so the other sources is the side windows and the small decorative ones but the back is the biggest source. It's not a hatchback but has a back window sort of like one. And it looks like it used to have tint that's pealing off. Thus my worry of view blocking. I did massive research on the sun shades, read loads of comments, looked at loads of pictures, and asked loads of questions. I had a sun shade set in my Amazon cart (attach to the windows without suction cups as thats how most said their view was blocked. Being an inch or so away from the window) that had the best and most reviews but placed it in the save for later area as I am just really scared of obstructing my view too much. Was recently in a car accident so that's where some of that is coming from.

First question. Does anyone use these baby/kid sun shades to help shade sun and heat in the summer on your service dog? If so, do they obstruct your view? What kind do you use (suction cups or no suction cups)? What about on a back window that's already a bit obstructed with pealing tint. Would it be worth the money (if I can save that up) to have professional tinting done on a 2001 car with 195,000 miles on it that likely won't last too much longer? Though it may last the year so this entire summer. It's really anyone's guess to be honest.

I use a summer vest here: Service Dog Harness in CUSTOM COLOR - whatever color you want! Includes Patches and Handle - cool, comfortable, and lightweight!. His is red. And I have these boots: Dead Link Removed. Which we didn't use last year really at all other then to train a bit with them as they are impossible to get on due to the sock thing at the top. Ruffwear has since remade the Summit Trex without the sock thing at the top: Link Removed which I just noticed would be cheaper to buy on Amazon then on Ruffwear's site using my service dog discount which is rather shitty but anyway, was going to buy them but ran out of money so ended up just cutting off the sock thing at the top on his current boots (the first link). It worries me that the velcro is now at the tippy top but they are with the new style anyway. I put them on him and they slide right on and i was able to tighten them so that i couldn't pull them off. So heres to hoping they work and don't easily fall off. Here and there of falling off is fine. Every 2 seconds or every step or two isn't. I also have Musher's Secert if I need it for a bit more protection. He isn't trained to work in boots as I was never able to use them last year but he wasn't working near is often as he is now. Now, the only place he doesn't go with me yet is to work. But, that's coming and I want to prepare for that. And I can and will train him to work in the boots.

So, we have some modified foot protection. We also have baby socks. If we need them. And we have 10 million water bowls. I wanted one on each piece of gear so that I wouldn't switch vests and forget to switch water bowls. Did that in the beginning, felt horrible, and found a great deal for like I believe 10 collasable water bowls for like $15 on Amazon. So, we have more bowls then we have gear. I also keep a set in my backpack and want to clip one to his treat bag. So I never forget one. And I of course take water with me and always have water in the car. It gets hot but still. He has yet to drink out of one of the bowls though. He just flat refuses to drink. I know its not the bowl size (though I do have a set of two large collaspable bowls) as he drank from his crate bowl and would go into the crate to drink rather to drink from his large one. And the crate bowl is about as big as the collasable ones. A but deeper I think but the size around is about the same.

I'm trying to do things in smaller spurts. So instead of going out all day I'm trying to go out for maybe an hour, come home and rest, let him drink and cool off on the cool hard floor and then go back out an hour later. And If I can help it, I'm trying to go out in the cooler parts of the day.

But, like today we went two places. My pharmacy and then Aldi (a cheap grocery store). The car was our biggest issue. I cannot figure out how to not to load him when its 100 degrees or hotter in the car. The only thing I can think of is to put it in neurtual (a stick) and the e brake on and let the AC run a few mins before loading. I want to figure out how to mount a battery powered fan I have to the middle thing to blow more AC from the front into the back as even with the vents all pointed to the back, not enough AC gets back there. And it doesn't help that the sun is beating down on him from the back window. I do show him loading and unload in the car and pretty much show the entire back seat and back window in a recent video if anyone wants to see it. Its on the site on my profile. Just if anyone wants a visual of what I'm attempting to describe. Does anyone have idea of how I can cool the car off and keep it cool?

I'm trying to run in fast so he gets into the AC pretty quickly then get myself together inside. I felt the pavement today and it wasnt too hot yet but was close. So I need to do a lot of boots training and then just work him in the boots in familuar places so he gets used to getting into positions with them on.

I used the sun shade in the front window while in Aldi to try to keep the car as cool as possible but it was still an oven. Even though we only ran in to get a few things and weren't in there that long.

I'm also asking him to down at the bagging station (you bag your own groceries there) at Aldi and that helps to cool him with his belly on the cool floor.

I'm sorry this was long and rambling. I just wanted to lay out what ive already done to help combat the heat. But we're still struggling. Mostly with the car. And summer is just starting. It's going to get way hotter. Any ideas?

Oh, also i want to get the Ruffwear Swamp Cooler but even with my discount its too much money at the moment. But I have some cooling towels I bought at Walmart after Irma that I can put around his neck if needed. Irma taught me a lot too but, we were combating the heat at home mostly. I only worked him to charge devices after Irma. And we were in the AC to do that. Someone showed how they used a shammy under the vest but this is too small to be able to stay on his belly or back. If anything Id want it on his belly and use our summer vest so that the water can evaporate (which is how cooling towels work). Maybe I can figure out how to attach it to his summer vest?

Car heat in summer is such a problem here. Dogs die in hot cars every year - it’s really awful. Because yeah, even if they’re left with a window cracked, it’s nothing for the inside of a car to reach 70 degrees (about 160F) when parked in the sun here.

For me and my doggo? He gets the front passenger seat so that I can maximise the number of AC vents blowing directly at him. It’s also a case of turning the car on and letting the AC run for a few minutes before I load him in. If the car is too hot, he won’t get in, and he gives me this tragic “Well, we’re both gonna die” look if the car is too hot.

Baby shade on his window absolutely, and plenty of stops for water (yup, totally keep a collapsible bowl). And I keep his coat shaved nice and short - that’s a big one. Apart from that, there’s a limit to what you can do.

I find that, personally, when it’s crazy hot outside, there’s a limit to how much time he actually spends working outside. Simply because I don’t handle the heat. So whilst I monitor him and signs for his heat stress? It’s usually me that needs to pack everything up and find some indoor air-con space to cool down first. So, while there’s definitely a need to stay smart, also remember that a lot of it is common sense - when you get too hot? It’s time to go inside and cool down.

Cooling doggo down when he overheats? Use a wet rag on his armpits, face and genitals for quick results without any internal damage.

He won't fit on the front seat unfortantly. I tried before he was a service dog and after I got a seatbelt harness. He hits his head on the dashboard no matter how easy I shift gears. So, unfortantly the back has to work.

What kind do you use? And do you think it obstructs the view much?

And I keep his coat shaved nice and short

He's a pitbull so he already has the shortest coat around thankfully. His belly is hairless mostly.

We don't really work outside. Mainly because I don't tolerate heat well. I will pass out quickly due to medical issues. So, apart from just driving and walking in and out of places, we aren't outside much. And I do limit how much I'm working him and watch him. Probably crazily. You remember my insane "OMG my dog is gonna have a heat stroke at 85 degees F after hurricane Irma. It's like my biggest fear for whatever reason. So, I'm being like a helicoper handler, if you will.

Yeah, I use his belly mostly. It seems to help the most. After Irma I tied that cooling rag around his neck. It barley fit as its meant for humans and not as big as a bandana but it worked. I used a wet bandana last summer. But then that left red die all over his neck and everyone thought I had abused him. But yeah, we do the wet rag thing already.

Maybe a solar powered fan for a car could help? I

Maybe. I'll look at it. I was looking at pushing the air from the front to the back so was looking at putting a fan on the middle consol pointed at him so that would push some of the air back there. That looks more like for front passengers. I already have a battery powered fan. Eats barrery power though. But, if I can find someway to mount it, it might help some. But it would be nice to not have to buy batteries all the time for it. Even a fan that charges on USB would work as I have several portable charges after Irma now. Enough to charge my phone 6 times. So, enough. I have one of those as well but that's way more rounded and wouldn't sit as well. If I can find a flat one that would be much better.

I'll look around and see what I can find. Thanks for the link!

Hehe, yup! And I reckon maybe you’re stressing now more than you need to!

I use a square baby shade that just has suction cups, and stick it on the window for a bit of extra shade when it’s hot and sunny. Doesn’t obstruct my vision too much. And TBH, he probably doesn’t need it. But it makes me feel like a good dog-mum, which is more the point!

People here are pretty gung-ho about their dogs because most of Australia? Dogs are living with high temps all year round, and actually regulate their body temps pretty well by panting and drinking lots of water. The big danger here is people leaving their dog in the car when they duck into a shop for a couple of minutes, not realising how quickly a car turns into an oven. So just remember to get it cooled dowb before you and doggo jump in and you should be fine:)

Most likely.

Thank you! I will totally get it and try it. At least for the back window. Makes me feel better that someone has tried it and had positive experiences with it. So many reviewers of all the brands (most especially the ones wirh suction cups) had these hotrific stories of near accidents. That scares the daylights out of me. I can always take it down if obstructing my view too much but my worry is thinking its not obstructing it and driving with it and finding out when its too late that its actully indeed obstricting my view too much. But then, is that just hyper vegenlence?

Yeah, I'll have to start doing that. I can't in times like coming out of therapy (about the longest I leave the car when inside somewhere) unless I go out, crank it, and duck back inside for a few mins. The issue there is not locking my keys in the car. I have a habit of locking the door and have had many close calls. What a disaster to lock your keys in your car while its running! Will need to find a clever spot to put the spare key.

@Justmehere, you had mentioned somewhere that you don't feed your service dog raw but feed high quality kibble. Im stopping raw and trying to find a cheaper kibble thats still high quality. What kibble do you use if you dont mind me asking? I'm currently feeding Merrick all breed but it's $65 for a 25 lb bag and Im trying to find a good brand that still high quality but cheaper. Anyone can advise. I just tagged you as we spoke about it once somewhere.

I use kibble with a protein content at 30 percent or greater. I’ve tried everything from Purina One (on the cheaper end) to Blue Wilderness High Protein (on the more expensive end.) Brothers Complete has a mix that is good for dogs with any food allergies.

Vets usually have good recommendations what kibble is best for various breeds.

Also, dogs cool via their paws and a little via their chest. There are some chest coolers from Ruffwear that are pretty effective.

Yeah but they connect via their harnesses which are unique. I cant see how to connect just the chest coolers to his service dog vest and dont want to buy their entire harness as thats just as much as a swamp cooler.

Thanks, will look at it. Im trying to keep him off chicken if possible, keep the protien content high, and keep it as high quality as possible. I didnt put him on the high protein Merrick simply because its raw infused and freeze dried raw without being rehydrated for a day is actually dehydrating.

Anyway, will just need to research and look around again. Sigh! It took me forever to choose Merrick all breed. But i cant pay $65 per 25 lbs anymore so will need to start at the beginning with the dog food advisory.

Can you get those neck things people wear that cool you down to put around your dogs neck?

I have 2 of them. Bought them from Walmart after hurricane Irma during the week of no power. They do help some but very hard to get it tied around his neck since its made for humans, smaller then a banada and much thicker. But i was able to get it tied.
