For years now, my New Year's has just been helping our dogs cope with the fireworks. I live in a country where it's legal for everyone to buy and set off fireworks, so New Year's Eve is about 4 hours of super-intense fireworks plus 20 hours of very frequent background fireworks.
Also, the week before New Year's and the two weeks after are teenagers setting off fireworks every 15 minutes or so, because they hoard them. That's technically illegal (only allowed to set them off on New Year's Eve) but hey, teenagers, right?
Our dogs are absolutely frazzled by it, so looking after that is what it's all about.
I'm grateful I live out in the country now, because it's a hundred times less bad than it was in the city.
So yeah, with that ^^ weird background  I always use New Year's as a reflect on the old year and relfect on the new year kinda spiritual thing... Checking in with my soul... Asking my soul if we're on the right path, or if there's any adjustments we should make.
Also, the country where I live has a tradition of "lead pouring" on New Year's. Given that lead is not a very healthy substance, that's a bit of a weird tradition, but hey. The tradition is you melt a chunk of led on a spoon and then tip the molten metal into a cup of water and the metal kind of "freezes" and solidifies in a weird shape. Then you and your friends guess what that shape is and what kind of "omen" that is for the new year. You need to get a bit creative... For example if it's the shape of a horse... Doesn't necessarily mean you'll be getting a horse... It could mean you're going on an interesting trip/ holiday (think horse ride) or something.
So, years ago, a friend came up with the idea of buying a Kinder Suprise Chocolate Egg (the ones with the little toys inside) and using the toy as an omen, instead of melting lead.
So usually I do that too... get a Kinder Suprise Chocolate Egg, get the toy and have fun riddling what on earth the toy could mean as an omen for 2019. It's fun, cos you search your subconscious for clues and if you look long enough and creatively enough, your subconscious usually comes up with something that's "oooooh, cool!"
