This is a complicated story so I’m going to try to just summarize. My other half and I recently moved in together. We are both combat vets with ptsd. His is more severe and co-morbid with Conversion Disorder and Narcolepsy with cataplexy. I care for him when he has “episodes”. These can last from a couple hours to a more than a week.
We live in a mobile home park. Until recently, we were in separate units and the only problems we had were getting repairs done. When we told the manager that we were moving in together she threw a tantrum and stated that she could not afford to lose the rent. Ever since then she has become very difficult to communicate with, even screaming over the phone and telling us to get out at one point. We are working on trying to buy a place but it’s going to take awhile. For four years she has always texted my other half to tell him when they were shooting fireworks. This year she did not and, in fact has been doing it closer to our place than before. I texted her on the 4th (after his second flashback) asking if she could save the whistling ones for somewhere else. Not only did she ignore the text, they have been using aa lot more of the whistling ones than in past years. There are other things happening but that’s the one that pissed me off the most. We are filing a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.
Have any of you ever dealt with this type of thing?

You’re filing a complaint over her being difficult and screaming at you to get out?

I don’t think this is something that’s a violation of your human rights. Yes, she’s a shitty land lord, but there are a lot of shitty land lords out there.

Her notifying you about fireworks was a courtesy, not something you are entitled to. Yes, this is the sucky world of having bad reactions to fireworks, we have no rights and our only option is to hunker down and hide.

Really? As the first sentence states, I summarized quite a bit. And, retaliation is illegal. I also only asked if anyone had been in a similar situation.

I'm wondering how in the world you know this is retaliation? Something the Human Rights Commission is going to ask and want prove of.

She has no obilgation to tell you about fireworks, which ones are used, how many, how long they will shoot they off, and where they shoot them off. She did this in past years out of courtesy.

Fireworks trigger me horribly and my apartment complex shoots them off for a week or two past the holiday. They are always right outside my window sounding like a bomb had just exploded in my house. The only time I called anyone about them was to report to the non-emergency police line that they were shooting off illegal fireworks (in Florida the professional ones can only be shot off by the water and not by normal everyday people and never by any residental areas, most especially an apartment complex because of how dry it normally is and being a fire hazard. Its illegal to throw a lit ciggertte out the car window for the same reason). The cop came, they stopped, then started after the cop left. After that, I didn't call anyone.

No one has any obligation to cater to our illness. We must cope no matter what the situation unless she broke the law. And you will have a hard time proving that not notifying you and setting off more whisle ones closer to your window as retaliation unless she actually confessed that to you.

Hello @Stacieamy - I'm thinking of you whilst you get through this time of year with the fire-works. It's horrible I agree.

Is your boyfriend receiving treatment? Best of luck when you start residing together. Ignore the money hungry landlord and enjoy your life together.

We are working on trying to buy a place but it’s going to take awhile.

^Good idea. Work on this as a strategy to resolve most of the problems you are experiencing where you live now. But maybe not for the fireworks...

But the fire-works will be an issue anywhere they are legally allowed to be and even where they are not legal unfortunately. The local Police would be able to help out in that circumstance I guess? Are there local government rules about how closely fireworks can be set off near your rental home?

We are filing a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.

^ I'm not conversant with the grounds you would have for a complaint to this mob. But ask yourself what it will achieve and if your time and money could be better spent finding that home?

Have any of you ever dealt with this type of thing?

^Idiots and fire-works... yes - unfortunately so. Actually I was hit by a firework rocket so I've got more than one reason to loathe them really. I'm always reminded of my injuries whenever I hear them. And I cannot tolerate being in close proximity to them either.

Have you thought of going somewhere for a short break (where they are not allowed and not being set off) during this time of year? That way you avoid the problem at least until you can move completely.

I am not asking for barracks lawyer advice. I asked if anyone experienced the same.
There’s a lot I have no mentioned that are obvious violations of the ADA and FHA.
The assumptions and attitudes here are f*cking pathetic and self-serving.

If you fail to give context and then complain about responses then who do you think is responsible?

If you know the law and know what you are doing go right ahead and do what you want to do. Why mention it at all?

Several responses, including mine have related our experiences with fireworks - so your question has been answered.

If you don't like it - then leave it.

I understand that fireworks and the noises they make are triggering. I don't see how this is a HRC issue.

Maybe someone has more knowledge than I do about this.
