News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

H1N1 didn’t cause such a scare — and it killed a lot of people. I wonder why this virus is freaking people out so much or people are getting so dismissive?

I don’t have a lot of compassion for people who are only JUST NOW being rational about spreading their germs around.

<grin> :sneaky: But I’ve got a helluva lotta gratitude for how much easier life is with other people practicing what used to be considered common courtesy!

I don’t usually give a shit about whatever pop-illness is in the news. My first quarter of Microbiology cured me of that. Duhn-duhn-daaaa 12 people dead of SARS! But we don’t blink at 50,000 dead annually (in the US alone) of the cold/flu? Pfft. Okaaaaaaay News Entertainment Media. Whatever. // combined with basic understanding of epidemiology (flues nearly always start in Asia, are nearly always swine flu or bird flu, and there are several dozen that virologists check to place a very educated bet about which are going to be strong enough to head west, and start mass producing vaccine for, and then the wave heads west across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, & the Americas. A few localized outbreaks from air travellers, but the tidal wave follows a very predicitble pattern.) Scientists get nervous when the flu breaks that pattern (originating, say, in Latin America instead of the Far East... because all of the infrastructure to test & begin mass production? Is a few thousand miles thattaway.). But the world response to scientists getting nervous? Is overwhelmingly supportive. MASSIVE reallocation of resources. Across political divides and closed borders. It’s one of the truly hopeful things about mankind... how people simply put aside their differences and RALLY when the chips are down.

Sometimes the DOOM DEATH DESTRUCTION DEMISE of the news entertainment media is strong arming some recalcitrant govts. into good behavior, and sometimes it’s just nonsense. But either way? Neither has very much effect on me.

Because I AM one of those “high risk” peeps. For almost a decade now, we’ve had the flu vaccine almost a full 6 months ahead of most Americans, because we had contact with people in the Middle East during their flu season, and a medically fragile child. And because callous uncaring f*cktards take their “it’s just the cold/flu” to work/school/etc. And their “it’s just being miserable for a few days” is OUR inpatient hospital stay in the ICU/PICU, tens of thousands to millions in medical debt, & months off school/work.

To be fair?

Callous disregard of illness is a first-world luxury-problem, to be sure. We have so many vaccines, and so much medicine, and such outstanding healthcare, and this huge buffer of herd immunity for most things (for most people)... that most people simply don’t stay home when they’re sick. Because there’s no public condemnation for coughing and sneezing all over people, dragging their illnesses out in public, infecting other people.

Which follows there’s also no recourse/compassion FOR sick people. No one brings groceries over, or puts delays on bills, because someone stayed home from work for a week. If someone is ill? They still have bills to pay, and food to buy, and work to go to. The public dismissive contempt for illness -in general- has gotten so bad that even SCHOOLS have limits on numbers of sick days (in my district, 9 days per year), before students are expelled. This is compared to unlimited days in early elementary, and 30 days per year in upper grades that was common a generation ago... and even longer periods of time easily allowed for in even earlier generations.

So... at least what I’ve noticed... is that the people being completely dismissive of this new pop-illness? Are largely the high risk peeps who live, day in and day out, with sick people blithely threatening their lives and not giving a damn... actually, it might be less dismissive, and more relieved, as other people are staying home, and covering their cough (Even looking guilty for coughing/sneezing in public to begin with, as opposed to WTF is your problem??? As they cough all over you.).

Because other people behaving with common decency? Is making high risk people’s own lives easier. Same threat to them, regardless of what the virus is. Meanwhile the people freaking out are mainly those who have never had to take other people being sick around them seriously. Because it’s never been any kind of threat to themselves, their lives, livelihoods, etc. Universal precautions are new to them, and the world is no longer set up to make allowances for people being sick, so they’re staring down the barrel of their kids being expelled from school, losing their jobs, being unable to pay bills... creating a hard conflict. “I go to work no matter how sick I am” previously a mark of pride, to scrambling trying to figure out how to stay away from those people & what to do if they can’t, or their kids can’t, or, or, or.

High risk group as well (autoimmune) and so is my mom. And not freaked out or stocking/hoarding. I'm not like Friday or one of my girlfriends (who's immune system is so compromised she had FOUR pneumonia shots to show antibodies)… I've been advised not to use vaccines and let my system fight it out. But... pulse oximeters are cheap... particularly to differentiate between cold and other respiratory symptoms (used one for a long time for seasonal asthma to cue my max compliance for instance). BUT... what Friday said:

It'd be lovely if people did take the risk more seriously, not just with coronavirus, but with all virus. I’m not immuno-suppressed, but I was as a child, when I got a stomach bug that very nearly killed me. I take it seriously, but others do not get why I make such a big deal of it. So many people are just ignorant of what damage their little bug can do to someone who can’t fight it off. I’ve a relative with cystic-fibrosis. A common cold can land her in hospital.

I work in retail. We have no known cases near us as yet, but people have been panic buying all week. We’re out of anti-bac gel, and people are getting quite upset. The company’s now reacting to the situation, sending out instructions to staff on what to do if... but I can’t help thinking it'd be nice if they had the same attitude to other illnesses, such as colds and stomach bugs. There are rules about those, but people are put under pressure to ignore them.

It’s bad enough working in a public environment where strangers cough and sneeze all over you all day long.

A family local to me had their results returned negative today. I did not panic when I read that tests were being done here, but I did have a wry laugh that something I am not overwrought about might ‘get me’ .

I guess the other thing this gives pause over is - if there is fear their is hope and want for life! So that’s a real positive for those who feel the fear and who struggle with mental health to hang onto! It is a challenge to any lingering SI, and identifying hope in a way.

There is a difference between - rightfully- taking things seriously...

... and headlessly and without ANY common sense panicking.

Like the company in my home town that has prohibited any non-company personnel on site.

Or the people buying tens of tens of lbs of pasta and rice.

Cases of Corona within literal hundreds of miles: 0.
Deaths of Corona within the entire country: 0.

Shops are running short of supplies like toilet paper and hand sanitizer. But I'm good - I still have my stockpile from the Y2K bug?

Normal paper / leaves / sea grass / grass & ATBs on hand like mushroom soups, clean / flowing water & soap, and a bazillion other normal workarounds people have for these cases.

That panic around this petty supply problems is so ridiculous to me.

Like people in most of the world manage, daily.
People in Europe & North Am 100 years ago also managed, daily. True. Slightly more mortality rate on avg. A few plagues here and there.

But all around, not the same havoc around it. IAO & move it.

People in Europe & North Am 100 years ago also managed, daily.
According to the book “Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things” toilet paper almost never caught on, the company itself going bankrupt several times... as people couldn’t understand why on earth they’d buy some special kind of paper just to wipe their ass with... when they had plenty of newspaper and SearsRoebuck catalogues already stacked 3 feet high in the outhouse. :roflmao:

And we think our grandparents didn’t recycle!

((Although I happen to keep that particular book IN the bathroom? All I do is read it.))

The Pacific NW is doooommmmeeddd.. We have 8 ...count them 8! cases between Washington, Oregon and Northern Ca. Its the lead story on every media channel out there.

Ya. 8 whole cases.
Compared to the range of 18000 and possibly up to 46000 number of people who have died since October of the regular old flu. (CDC website)

People panic at the slightest thing that is unusual. They won't get a flu shot but they will decimate Walmart of face masks and hand sanitizer because of the lead story on the news.

Is Coronavirus a problem? yep - because we have no immunity. But is it enough of a threat to lose your mind over? Nope.

So, now is not the time to take your dream vacation on a cruise liner..and if you don't need to go to the doctor's office (it's just a check up and nothing more) if you don't need to ....I'd put it off until the spring. But there have been some silly threads going around like "To avoid Corona Virus, avoid Chinese Restaurants"....I really don't understand why they just picked on the Chinese....not the Italian restaurants (maybe someone needs to be dramatic or blame someone), but I would have thought they would have included Korean restaurants...and as of recently....all US restaurants!

Common sense: (wash hands, cough in arm, stay away from places w sick people if you are high risk)....treat it like the flu....eat well/have good self care, get fresh air and sunshine, exercise, stay hydrated and keep your immune system in order. Think preventative....but not obsessive.....because stress can tank one's immune system. I think that is key.....while the corona virus might come to your neighborhood, so could something worse......tomorrow. If I were to die in a week....something quick and fast, I don't want to waste quality time obsessing over something that "could happen." Yeah, just cause the virus has a new name....and it's in vogue isn't a reason to panic. Reasonable caution=prevention.....so if you are already doing great self care....you don't need to make many changes....right?
For those of you working in the healthcare field, be extra careful...wear a mask.
