News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

So my supervisor has told our lab group that we should make sure we have access to our data from offsite, so that if we go into any lock-down period, we can at least do some data analysis from home.

So I've just been sorting that out for myself. Figured it would just be a simple click and drag exercise of my data directory from my computer.

Then my hard drive spits out some error message about there not being enough space.

Seriously, hard drive??? I just emptied you.

<tries again>

Same error message.

<hmph increases>

<actually checks size of data directory>

Oh.
My bad.
Okay.

1.5T of data definitely isn't going to transfer onto a 250GB hard drive.

Nevermind then

Thanks, covid-19, for making me realise how much data I've generated these past 2 years

If coronavirus PANIC hasn’t hit your area yet, get what you need for a bit now.
Thanks for this.
Increasingly in NZ I am getting the feeling of 'calm before the storm'.

My boyfriend and I are going to the supermarket later today to (*sensibly) stock up on necessities.
I noticed the hand sanitiser section was all sold out when I popped to the store a couple days ago. Hopefully that's all that is so far.

I got exposed to a sick person who returned from overseas and who was totally f*cking irresponsible. I did get a sick and I got a cold. I rang National and State Health who said I wasn't eligible for testings. If I did it over I would just ring and say I have a temperature, a cold and I am coming with a mask on. I wouldn't be fobbed off. It's been stressful.

This is a shame about not testing though is (because if that was coronavirus then I am not going to be struck down unless it mutates). The thing is that I can't go in to a 2500+ school to teach if I am a potential carrier. So I was not impressed. I have had work offered at 4 x 2500 school & a 1000 one. This morning I got one of the really good schools ringing but I had to be honest I am not out of the 2 week self isolation period I think they have 2700 students. But I am self isolating for the two weeks because, you know, not being completely f*cking irresponsible. No f*cking sick pay I am casual. But I If I knew it was not coronavirus I could cook up food and drop it off to the vulnerable oldies but I can't risk it. So f*ck that for a joke. And do I do two weeks from when cold went, and I stopped being sick or from the time of exposure? It's not the best. I f*cking hate the world anyway at the moment. I know heaps of older folks I want to be able to help out. But I don't want risk giving anyone anything.

We have a solid Health woman who gives precise health details talks about it really well and the other Health bloke who pulled the press up on getting too dramatic.

So Morrison used coronavirus to distract from something else - I took him seriously until he said he was still going out in large groups. WHO & Wuhan China were painting very different pictures. Even after the 4 Corners programme. He even said this week that he was going to the footy this weekend. There is no excuse for this. He has access to information. The Italians went from 79 cases to 2000 in 7 days. From less that 100 cases to 10,000 in a week.

If I had the coronavirus then I am really lucky and I was just a bit off colour but I can't risk spreading it to so many vulnerable people.

I have been bored so have been reading a lot about how different countries, counties, territories are managing their Covid19 and Morrison and Trump were still saying they were going out in crowds. Sure be positive but don't encourage idiotic behaviour. Someone needs to help Trump. There was a study that showed Democrats were washing their hands more than Republicans and they don't know for sure but it could be because he said it's not a problem. Those poor Republicans and all those poor people without healthcare. Someone's got to help those people. Folks need accurate information at least about hand washing.

So the Italian familes don't get to say good bye which they have to do to stop transmission. That's grim. Families of Italian Covid-19 victims denied chance to say goodbye | World | The Times

Australian lives will depend on slowing it right down so they don't get in the position they were/are in Italy. U.K's been discussing who would be treated in terms of best prognosis of recovery. Australian hospitals have ramping where folks arrive in an ambulance and wait four hours to get in so I can't see increased surge capacity happening that well there. Medicos seem to be a bit stressed. I just listened. I don't know what to say.

Italy has been hammered.

Breaking transmission preventing transmission whatever I have to do to help I will do it. So I am really for slowing that transmission down as much as possible. If everyone just cut back as much as possible for 2-3-4 weeks it could make a significant impact on how many get sick in a certain time frame. https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe...to-save-younger-patients-20200312-p5499t.html

If you are on Twitter there's a couple of threads. Silvia Stringhini @silviast9 Thread by @silviast9: 1/ I may be repeating myself, but I want to fight this sense of security that I see outside of the epicenters, as if nothing was going to ha… Not sure if we are allowed to put Twitter threads on. I hope so. Otherwise I can come back and delete.

Ironically given that B has been incredibly ill all this year and was in and out of hospital 3-4 weeks ago we have been more protected than most. I isolated myself due to exposure from a total f*ckwit. We have missed probably a big surge in transmission. It doesn't mean I won't get it (again?) but I am much more protected than the average yogi bear. I really worry about folks who believe the crap of leaders who say it's okay to go out in crowds when for the more vulnerable amongst us that is simply not true. It's irresponsible.

So I just agree with folks with whatever they say but I just say step back just for 2-3 weeks it could make a huge difference if the mathematical models. Not that my social interaction is high as yeah I tweeting to people. I f*cking hate the world but not because coronavirus.

When SARS and MERS never had much of an impact on me. I was interested in the Bird Flu because I was working with birds then and I knew someone was so fascinated by it.

I think I feel so concerned for folks that are not well educated. And I hate all the alleged politicians our prime minister saying to not so bright people yeah just go out and be in a crowd when that politician will get the best medical attention money can buy. We have a medicare for all but if you get 200 extra cases in a day the system will get swamped. Anyway life is really shit at the moment. I wish I could help more. I could help with the animals in the fires. I did a lot but I can't do much for folks except just not go into any schools so at least I am not a vector of transmission.

And the callousness of oh it's only the old people, and the people who are sick. So many people with Trauma and PTSD have physical illnesses. But if you are triaging to see who is getting treatment you got to make hard decisions. I just want to do something for the medical people, you know? I wish I could do something.

I was reading that Australia is 5-10 days away from being like Italy but if we cancel all large events we can prolong. Dead Link Removed

It's ironic - no schools rang and then since I saw that f*ckwit woman and her f*ckwit friend I have had three or more schools ring per day. Even the two really good schools rang again. That's not a good sign it shows everyone is down sick. I hope it is only general flu and not Covid19. But I got offered a lot of work. No one would have known that I was sick but it's the principle of the thing one woman wrote " Try to have pity on the myriad of old people you could exterminate." and "We must spread the word to prevent what is happening here from happening all over Italy."

I am quite mentally unwell at this time, my PTSD & anxiety is so high. I am hypervigilant and right out there. I haven't been exercising because I didn't want to spread. So it's a good thing I decided to self isolate. And so I wrote one post here because one of the doctors in Italy said share this information. It's a tiny thing to do but at least I can do a small thing for some doctor in Italy who is going out of her mind because of what is happening.

It's taken me so many days just to write this one post. I think you are all amazing and I hope you are all safe.

Yeah. If other things are starting to go, don’t give into the panic. All you really need is soap anyhow, and once that started to disappear, they started to ration it a week ago here and continue to do so whenever they get more In stock. My country, the US, doesn’t really do calm on *anything* and consumes to cope. Sigh. I got some cans of beans, meat, veggies, fruit, rice, candy... that kind of stuff... I got it a few weeks ago so that if I can’t go to the store easily when perishable food goes, I can just hang out longer away from everyone without as much fuss. And if things clear up fast, well, then I have food I’d be willing to eat anyhow and less errands to run. :) But it looks like we are in for a long haul lockdown here based on the news updates happening as I type.

We've been advised that all non-essential overseas travel should be reconsidered.
All gatherings of 500 ppl should be cancelled. The authorities are going to great pains to emphasise that this is advice only.
So for now, no bans!

Our domestic carrier, Qantas has just reported a flight between capital cities here had a sufferer onboard and they're trying to notify the passengers.

The first community transference of the virus is alleged to have happened today.

I think everyone is doing a bit of shopping. lol

And, just because it seemed odd, on my way home tonight I noticed that the small towns i drove through seemed extra quiet.

I know, but things look odd to me, even when their not? My ptsd brain perhaps? I look for odd!

So, maybe folks around here already stocked up on toilet paper?

- still laughing - yeah hope so -

Give yourself an off ramp.

^Excellent advice - thank you. I'm giving myself lots of off ramps & highway stops.

70,000 people have recovered from covid-19.

^This is also so important. We all need to remember that the vast number of people who do get this illness recover!

he returned with a vengeance!

^And from one mother to another?? - He will return again & bounce back with a vengeance Friday.
Not trying to simplify or minimise, it is so really bad, I appreciate that but he's young and yeah well he's got you for a mum. :):wtf::hilarious: So he'll be okay.

ding that Australia is 5-10 days away from being like Italy but if w

^Perhaps not ms spock. Italy has an entirely different demographic to Australia. We have been testing o/s visitors for weeks now and whilst it will get very bad and there will be a lot of suffering I think we have to stay calm and keep some perspective.

If you're sick with anything that is infectious - even the 'common cold' - going into schools is not ideal at all. So, it's not just this particular illness.

Sorry you're feeling rotten towards the whole world too.

My p-doc has always told me that if I need more Xanax then he prescribed for the 3 months (10 pills as needed for panic attacks) to give him a call. I called today and the nice office person said it shouldn’t be a problem. Then tonight she called back and said that he wouldn’t approve it. I’ll have to wait until my April appointment. I just politely said “ok.” I’ve never even asked him for a refill in the two years I’ve been seeing him. This was all followed by a panic attack that I took Buspar for because I didn’t want to waste my limited supply. The Buspar usually only works as maintenance so that did nothing. They also wouldn’t fill my trileptal or daughter’s Wellbutrin, but assured me it won’t go out of stock. Both my husband and my income is about to take a nosedive. Daughter paid for college housing and a meal card that she won’t be using for three weeks. People around here are stocking up like it’s a hurricane. My T tells me that I’m good at “riding the anxiety wave.” We’ll see.

Just saw a news clip ...three women in a physical right in a store over a package of toilet paper. Smacking the crap out of each other. :banghead:
70,000 people have recovered from covid-19.
I soooooo wish the media would push this info out. And the part that says 80%of people who get corona had mild symptoms and recover just fine. It might bring some of this panic down. Hubby and I need to go to store tomorrow for some fresh fruit n such....Will be curious to see what's left.

I have a whole disaster thing in our shed - yknow, for earthquakes and snow and such. Hubby has been kidding me for years about all the food I have in there. Who knew it might be for the flu!!
Out of school for 2 years, back for 6mo, our for another year. f*ck. f*ckity f*ck f*ck.
Oh. Poor kid...that sucks

COVID-19 #CoronaVirus Infographic Datapack — Information is Beautiful

As I keep saying (and actually start getting attacked for from panicky friends for being insensitive and allegedly downplaying the disease...Duh!), keeping vigilant, proactive and taking precautionary measures and keep looking out for our high risk friends and family? ABSOLUTELY super important. Still...BIG PICTURE folks, BIG PICTURE! 80,000 cases...3,200 or so deaths...in friggin CHINA? That's a small village over there. 1.4 BILLION people.

Perspective.

It depends on how you view this though.

Despite massive community lockdowns, thousands of people have already died from an illness that has only existed in humans for a few months.

China is already majorly rebouncing with only a couple hundred new cases a day if at all, with a further decreasing trend. Things are re-opening and lockdowns are being lifted as we speak. The massive and drastic community measures have obviously worked pretty well.

The outbreak was in a region with major hygiene issues and poor lung health. Also, the lockdowns didn't start immediately (it was being hushed for a few weeks at the beginning) and infections spread rapidly by sheer density of people. Wuhan has a population of 11 million.

The number of new Chinese coronavirus cases reported Thursday came in at 26.

South Korea reported 114 new cases Thursday, down from 242 cases reported the day before.

China's coronavirus center of Wuhan sees single-digit new cases for second day
China’s Wuhan city, ground zero of the new coronavirus outbreak, reported five new cases on Friday, the second day in a row the tally has been less than 10, while no locally transmitted infections were reported in the rest of the country.

^Yeah I agree. But statistics are always bendy, flexible and perhaps outdated by the time they're published even?? :cautious:

Applying a good dose of common sense is always prudent too.

HOWEVER. Given that the rumour mills, gossips & the only other sources of information can be severely skewed. I'd rather believe some numbers.

Cold comfort if you're not one of the mob that recover - of course. But I feel better knowing my kids are likely not going to suffer any ongoing problems.
