News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I heard from a Police officer. Frankly, I'm more concerned about the retail industry. They are on the front line.

Everyone will be impacted in some way. But I don’t see how you can use hearsay as a legitimate source right now. This is why there is so much widespread panic, literally a game of telephone. One person said this, the next person twists it some (unintentionally I’m sure) and passes it to the next. Huh, just like the virus itself, but I digress.

Everyone should do what they can to keep up their hygiene, retail workers are right along with health care workers, police, etc. Keep up hygiene and people will be fine. No one profession is more important than another just because one might have experienced pandemics before (that was an incredibly weird statement and I do hope you clarify it).

I couldn’t find a single thing to support the statement about the police role changing so in the sites I used were Michigan.gov/coronavirus and cdc.gov/coronavirus, all they talk about are the basic hygiene and common sense rules. Nothing about anything else.

Please, please fact check before spreading rumors as fact. It does way more harm than good as evidenced by our current situation.

just because one might have experienced pandemics before
Yeah, this was a weird comment, because healthcare workers have experienced this before (as have ALL emergency folks), and the rule is keep on keeping on. Wash your hands. Nothing is different. Because whether it's a new virus or an old virus, rules are the exact same. Wash your hands. This isn't some super deadly illness. It's a cold.

The issue is with the panic, with the panic buying, and the stealing alcohol gel from wards (Yes that has been happening), and if it's true, then the police being dickwads and refusing to attend to calls, yeah that's also an issue. Due to the panic, not due to the actual illness. Plus if we go further it's really a problem with the system as a whole cos most people only get "mild cough and sore throat", and I'm not allowed basically to call in sick with those symptoms, it'd put my job in jeopardy so f*cking fast.

Not to mention if I decided to not care for a patient that had a mild cough. So if we want to go with the idea that all emergency services are equally important then they should all do their job as they always do it. Because healthcare professionals don't get the choice, And again, it's basically a f*cking cold. We can handle it.

It’s not so much about the police per se as it is reducing anyone going into an ER. The less anyone can be going in and out of the ER the easier it will be to prevent dragging germs in and out of the hospital and into the public and from the public into the hospital. It’s a good decision to reduce police interaction with hospitals that will have lots of people in isolation. Keeps everyone safer. They will reduce or block entirely family and friends visiting and anyone else they can prevent going in to the hospital.

Yeah. Less people should be going to the ER as a general rule, always. But if police are refusing to go to ER with someone then that falls on other services. I don't think police were wandering into ER/A+E unnecessarily before. So if they are now refusing, who is picking up their slack?

Volusia county in Florida is issuing a State of Emergency. There's 3 impacted there. Broward county is the most infected county in Florida with 11. Not sure why Volusia county is issuing a state of emergency but only had the tv on for a few mins.

All too damn close. Having one in my county terrifies me. I am physically unwell. I am def one of the ones most likely to get it and for it to wreck havock with me.

@Chris-duck, I view it this way. This is panic right now. What it can quickly turn into is civil unrest. People out being insane. Police will be needed to keep the peace. Enforce the law. Fight the monsters that humans tend to turn into with mass panic. I think allocating job duties is important right now. Paramedics and hospital staff deal with the sick. Police keep the peace. If that makes sense.

Every job is important. As is organizing and allocating duties to keep everyone as safe as possible while stopping the spread of this virus.

ETA: They were saying that it'd be a good idea to stock up on groceries in case you need to self quarnatine. I wonder if I should make a nightly grocery haul tomorrow. Anyone think that's even a good idea?

@Chris-duck - I think the questions you are asking are going to play out differently around the world in different communities for different needs and it’s going to be hard to get one pat satisfying answer on this thread from such a diverse audience.

I think it’s important to remember that as this all plays out to remember that we all might all face stress cups filling up faster and getting triggered easier. Not everyone is going to do things the way we would want or prefer to do. Lots of stress will be spinning around and a lot of people doing the best they can with what they have got to cope and manage with circumstances most have never ever faced before.

I feel like it didn't read like chris-duck was looking for answers, she just has experience which is valid here. And I dunno if I'm mistaken but I thought luckilee was a supporter and not a sufferer so wouldn't get triggered?
