But- he is doing it At home

Which is something I inqured about but is not something that I will be approved for.

I work for a nationwide cable provider who also provides home phone service. [Edited out specific info about the company. I know they look at intetnet acivities and don't want to say anything outside of their words or what they, themselves posted.] Without our services people don't have phone for medical devices, 911, and other services as well as the ability to call family (you'd be suprised of the number of people without cell phones. Think the elderly without family or friends). Internet for those that are working or schooling from home. Security systems. And cable tv.

My company is a utility company. An essential business that people cannot go without right now. Our doors cannot close and that includes stores and sending techs out to homes.

It is not just an office job. It is a utility company just like any other landline phone or electric company. All businesses are closed except for essential businesses. We are one of those, by law.

And further more, again, I am not sick so that is a non-issue anyway.

I decided to not go out of my way to get gas today. I have a bit over a half of a tank, live only 5.5 miles from work and the local authorities did say people would be allowed to get gas, food, and medications. So, its not like an emergency to get before Thurs at 11pm or anything like usually after a hurricane when roads can be dangerous at night.

And with most being forced to be at home most of the time and even I only leaving the house when going to and from work and only then leaving when 100% necessary, I A) don't want to add a trip out unnecessarly (what they don't want you to do anyway) and B) gas will be wildly available and likely cheaper since most are not getting gas.

Just used to panicking about gas simply because my only experience with curfews is after a hurricane so this is all new to me.

Ky Gov. announcing more restrictions to start at 8 pm tomorrow night. "With 39 new coronavirus cases and 163 total cases in Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear announced more measures he is taking to slow the spread of the virus.

Effective 8 p.m. Thursday, all non-life sustaining businesses will be forced to close to in-person traffic, the governor said."

All my travel is essential and has been for a few years. Getting necessities. I went a little out of my way, but I wanted to put the old homestead in a posture of defense. Nothing else was bothering me really about supplies I was short on. My BJ's has special hours now for handicapped/disabled. I qualify I'm old enough thank goodness I don't have to worry about being asked why I'm disabled?

Ok so people are doing it here . Things were deserted. That's exaggerating, noticeably quiet is more like it. The traffic on the highway was 3am level, the stores were quiet. Stock levels were better or the same as the last time I went. Better but I didn't go looking around. I got what I wanted both aces and left (man shopping)

The construction guys were working at the bldg going up next to stop and shop. They seemed all to be working but not the state guys on the highway work. The contractors and building supply trucks were going around as usual, maybe somewhat less? Hard to tell.

So that's all a little spooky but still not upsetting, no one is panicked. Visibly at least, I'm sure lots of people are, But the people who are out being good . Why not? At least there's no traffic.

I have been out of work since January, in my late 40's and live alone so the whole social distancing thing for me isn't an issue as due to being on unemployment already have been home most of the time. Although I am a pretty social person(supporter) my guy and I haven't talked much lately other than a few texts here and there he has been very distant which I can understand and I am good at giving him his space.
I am in Oregon and we were not under I call it house arrest, just to keep my humor going until Monday due to the ignorance of people not listening to the Governor's advice to stay home 1,000's flocked to the Beach as to enjoy the beautiful we were having putting the people who already live there most of which are elderly at risk! This just makes me so mad! People are so ignorant! I went to the grocery store and got what I needed for myself and two kitties to last two weeks and that was it. My father is 74 years old and I lost my mom 6 years ago to Cancer i can't afford to loose him too!
I have kept applying for jobs had 5 interviews last week and today was offered the one where my interview was via the phone!!!! Irony in am in Medical Customer Service and Support.
I feel those unemployed can do it! These days most job applications are online via indeed and interviews are being held via Skype and phone! Hang in there everyone! We can do it!

@Mee

I wasn't talking Govt / Other such logistics, decisions & policy makers.

Customer support LFS does that I *was* talking about is not your beau's kind of essential and all...

And there come the times people evac embassies, consulates, others to save lives & protect valuable personnel, their work, and their continued efforts in & for the location, too.

I think it would surprise some where some of these interactions go. My husbands job has him liaise with governments regularly- yet he works in a commercial sector. The thing is we are cogs in a wheel and all of us play a part - Take sections out is requisite in situations like this - the cogs we can do with out are going to show. We can do without having our hair cut for a while :(. We cannot function without utilities. We can do without cosmetics- But not toiletries. Soap is vital in this! What’s safer now? A factory making many loaves of packaged slice bread? Or many independent bakeries selling loaves of bread staying in production? I just don’t know.

I can totally see that cable has become an infrastructure- incredibly important to support people working from home and maintaining quarantine. However- it’s somewhat ironic anything office based to do with comms isn’t possible to do from home. And rather concerning!

Which is part of why it’s important that people who are sick follow recommendations to stay home for 2+ weeks & self quarantine, rather than going into work for fear of losing their job, and infect the entire center. 1 person quarantining, or 10% quarantining? Isn’t going to cause any problems on an infrastructure level. Whole departments, floors, and buildings wiped out? Is a problem.

LFS also said that the company IS sending people to work from home with their entire kit... top down. People with the longest time/highest clearance; as a basic security precaution... as well as people who are the highest risk. It’s the low level/low risk employees who aren’t being sent home with their entire kit to work from home. At least not, yet. Security protocols always relax as needs must/emergencies evolve. But that also means that they’re depending on each other to not come to work if they’re sick.

What I was challenging was the idea of “no choice”. That she HAS to go to work, can only miss 2 days/not 2 weeks.

America isn’t a socialized country. We have neither the infrastructure in place, nor the common consent, to take care of people in times of crisis. So it’s a clusterf*ck as people are afraid of losing everything... their jobs, healthcare, homes, ability to feed themselves & their kids... and as such? Have been continuing to go to work enmasse. To the point the govt. has been having to enforce shutdowns of private & govt. run businesses... and then half assed follow up with halting evictions/ halt power&water shutoffs/ astronomical % increases on credit cards, etc. But still people believe they have “no choice” but to go to work.
