My business falls under what's considered essential, but I don't have letters or paperwork because my business is just me so I don't really know what to do.
It depends on your area.

I had to play around with google key words to find the right combo... this one did it. Just add your city or state
how to show my business is essential? US stay at home order

For example? Here’s Winston-Salem NC (that I looked up for a mate, earlier). No permission or paperwork needed, although if you’re travelling, printing out the PDF to carry/show anyone challenging you, or one better if you know where you’re going, also looking up their policy would be smart. All the cities & states I’ve looked up so far have an FAQ & a place to direct questions -like the city attorneys office- if what’s readily available doesn’t answer your Q.

Do I or my company need permission from the city to be open as an essential business?

No permission from the City is needed to open as an Essential Business. Essential Businesses are fully outlined in the Stay at Home Order document (PDF), and additional information is provided here on the Frequently Asked Questions page about the order. If these documents do not answer your question about whether your business is considered essential, please contact the City Attorney’s Office, the Public Safety Attorney’s Office or the City Manager’s Office. it’s easy enough to track & bill NZ for later;
Yeah, nah. That won't happen. I mean, it potentially could happen, but...nah.

Making sure they’ve the means to care for themselves in an emergency?
The package that they will be benefiting from is directed at businesses to help them keep on staff even though their income has tanked. We have a lot of working Kiwis here, and atm, the Govt's attitude seems to be heavily geared towards keeping people in jobs wherever possible, even if those jobs aren't economically viable while everything is shut down. So that there's a smoother transition out of this mess, and back to some semblance of functioning economy and industry, at the end of it.

As far as I know, NZers still aren't eligible for ordinary welfare payments. But if they've managed to keep working up to this point, their employer will be getting a subsidy to keep paying them for the next 6 months. Even though our social distancing rules limit gatherings to 2 people, the govt seems to want as many businesses to stay open as possible.

There's a confusing and conflicting message there: don't go out unless it's essential, but keep working if you possibly can. How successful that will be as a strategy for cushioning the economic fallout of covid 19 remains to be seen. But that's where I think the intention lies - keeping people working, and businesses open, even if they need to be propped up by govt subsidies to do that for a while, because it will (theoretically) be easier to restart the economy with businesses that stayed open and retained staff, than starting new businesses from scratch.

And...I don't think I've answered your question!

Unsure if this will answer your question either, @Friday , because my brain is doing that really cool thing where comprehension be Hard, but this is what our PM had to say on it:
"New Zealanders are a core part of the Australian workforce. Many are working on the front line in essential services. Others have built their careers there and paid taxes for years, so it's really pleasing the Australia Government has agreed to provide them a wage subsidy at their time of need.

"We need to unite and look after everyone to beat Covid-19 and Prime Minister Morrison and I are in regular contact about our respective efforts to beat the virus and support our people."

I'm worried about being stopped by police or something. How do I show them I'm essential?
To add to the great advice others have posted, don't stress too much about being stopped. Friends and myself have been under stay at home or shelter in place orders for some time now. No one has been stopped when traveling. Really. The police are fairly busy and/or getting sick. Everywhere that I know, one can simply say they are going to a grocery store, and bam, travel is approved, so some people I know simply have that sentence practiced and then just plan to actually go to a grocery store if police followed. I mean... just goes to show how hard enforcement will be. They are only going to self employed essential business, like you, unable to get a letter easily so they printed the local orders too to prove they are essential. I don't agree with this approach of lying, but it just goes to show you are not alone and these orders are really not about folks like you but kids holding keggers. I have a number of friends with letters, myself too if I wasn't under quarantine, but no one has ever had to show it for some time. That all being said, it may be different on the ground there.
The one thing I will quibble with was someone complained about people mowing their lawn. Being out in the garden has been recommended, at least where I am. Physical distance from people and quarantine while ill do not mean you have to be literally locked in your house. It means you need to not be exposed to other people.
Very true in the US.

Not sure many affected will take it up. It sounds great, but the caveats are beyond the scope for those already affected with businesses that have tanked / are going to tank because they simply don't have the funds to remain open.

You have to pay the person the same hours you were to get the money. All they're doing is trying to shift the same cost from Centerlink to employers. Centerlink is untaxed, the employer one is taxed + super, etc. If a business doesn't have the additional funds that comprise the persons income to pay them in the first instance, this will do nothing. It will help some though, no doubt about it. Obviously there is much more to be released on this package... but it isn't as great as it sounds when put into action within a crumbling business that has no money to begin with, to keep their doors open.

Employers can't keep people and pay them with thin air, combined with this subsidy, to meet the conditions. No income coming into a business is no income, regardless how the Government wrap this up for sale to the country.

On 1:45 of the utube video I posted or earlier... He said two weeks. He's going to make another announcement on Tuesday. ( that's about all I could watch) he's talking about opening restaurants. Etc
Can't wait to hear what he has today. Hope u r good. : )

Thank you. I have bag balm which saved my ass while in KS. Without it my skin would hurt too much to even put clothes on. Throwing that in my bag.
Bag balm is the best!

I see stories like this and I want to stand up and cheer them on! Dyson to make 15,000 ventilators - CNN They invented a new ventilator in 10 days and they are cranking them out.
I love my Dyson and I'm a fan of the company. Another favorite business Texas Roadhouse A restaurant chain, Was in the news the CEO is donating his salary to the employees.

Our daughters are starting to.stress. Dealing with the handicapped is extremely difficult at times. I have to.struggle to remind myself that I'm not being emotionally and physically assaulted during her outbursts and to a lesser extent that goes for the rest of this crew.

So yes, cabin fever.

I'm not watching the news and limiting my exposure to everything. My wife and I continue the thirty years Jiu-Jitsu match, always hoping for better things.

Nothing is going on here except people are home. There are news reports about what's going on but it's impossible to know what to believe.

Everyone is working in this area. Except for the commuter rail parking and everyone being around I wouldn't know this was happening.

I've been socially distant for the better part of a month. There is no sickness evident here except for numbers on the news.

They are closing the beach I heard. That means to out of town walkers. They'll say they mean everyone. They will close the public parking. It's only a small area at the head of the beach. The cops will assume anyone else on the beach is from here.

We'd like to keep walking out doors. I supposed could do PT out in the yard but the yards are so small we would be in social distancing violation anyway.

Everyone has to get some exersize somehow. House is Way to small no exercise studio in here lol.

So we will see what today brings.
