News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Cartels & crime exploiting the situation is kind of no news ever...

But the innocent people caught in the crossfire of both the cartels & response I'm kinda worried for.

Since 'strong response' sounds as a thing to do & a nice act only on paper.

All we really did, per last night's White House Press conference, we got intel about Mexician drug cartel trying to ship more drugs into the country while we are focused on just Covid-19 and so the US increased the military and all of the department of defenses areas with boats and aircraft to both the Eastern Pacific Ocean and The Carribean Sea to be able to intercept more tons of cocaine. Before we would of only been able to intercept a fraction of that. So, it just means we are sending more forces out to intercept more drugs.

At least that's how I understood what was said.

Exercises at home is easy and requiries little or no equipment. A chin up bar is real handy. The problem is, you have to do it. Im not, because I sweat. If you sweat continually in a room it tends to smell like a gym.

But PT works which is why the military uses it on soldiers. Chin ups push ups squats sit-ups stretching. I'm too self conscious to do it in the yard, lol. We are walking on the beach till they tell is we can't.

And, since the current president is horribly challenged in the "truth and accuracy" department, how do we know this is true? Seems to me he has a track record of creating paper tigers to distract people, or frighten them into following him. Maybe this is real, maybe it's just him, blowing smoke, again.

Oh, I have no idea if it's true. Was just advising what was said as it was described in more detail then just "strong response". Was just advising what was said and those details. I'm not the best at fact checking but there are some on here that are. Not sure you can fact check all of it but some of it to know if its true or not?

It might be physically easy but you also presented a couple of real restrictions.

I’ll also add even at my very fittest - and I competed in a sport professionally- I don’t think I could ever do a pull up. I could out sit up anyone - but I never had great upper body strength, as a disabled weak person now - never going to happen ?. I’m not trying sit ups, but I am doing little crunches, and twists and - under the flab it’s still strong ?.

Gently Concussive exercise is strongly underrated- Especially for women and children Just dancing to the radio is something ! And doesn’t feel so much like exercise.

I had the same problem so I got a stool. You stand on the stool and you control the weight with your legs . You can so an almost full body workout this way. I went from not being able to hang my weight on the bar to 10 or 15 chinups.

I heard the conference, but kind of didn't listen closely because I no longer consider the White House to be a source of credible information. I listen to the news conferences mostly because I want to have at least some idea of what he's thinking at a given moment. It sounded to me like this move is based on "intelligence", Meaning the kind of thing other people gather, not the kind of thing some people "have". So, I'm not sure we CAN fact check him. Not without some independent knowledge of what the drug cartels are up to.

The thing is, drug cartels operate like any other capitalist enterprise. Supply & demand and all that. They might think it's easier to sneak stuff into the country right now (and I kind of doubt that's true, because paranoia is everywhere) but there's not a lot of motivation to increase supply if there's not an increase in demand. Is there an increase in demand? IDK I can't see where it makes sense to sneak a bunch of drugs across the border and STORE them here. Costs money & there's the chance of them being found and then the whole cartel could unravel.

Sooooo, I'm not quite sure what to think about this. On the one hand, this could be based on actual facts, but we don't have access to those "facts". On the other hand, he could be trying to create a distraction. Or something else. (No idea what that would be.) I think, when dealing with this president, it's hard to know what to believe. I, personally, believe he's motivated more by self interest than he is by anything else, and his idea of "truth" is about the same as my ex-husband's. "If it feels good in the moment, it must be true". Don't trust his "facts" without independent confirmation of those facts.` (Nothing wrong with you bringing up the news story, BTW. It's a real story. I'm just skeptical of what he said being based on "real facts".)

I personally think there's an increase of demand. You have the already addicted, many may get clean over this but many won't so they need to feed that addiction. Then you have those that were clean and now the world's gone to shit so they wanna now get high more then ever. I know I've had that feeling many times. Then you have those people giving it to new people. And since the world has gone to shit, who cares is the mindset many may have.

I don't know cause people need money to pay for it and that's what most is short on. But there are many ways addicts make money, not all of it is legal. And many of it from the rich and those with continued money flow.

I can see a millon reasons why there would be an increase of drug useage.

And that's really not talking about Trump and honesty at all. Just, I can see the possibility of increased drug demand.

I found this article to be a fascinating read: Coronavirus as Ideology

That’s when it finally struck me. This is not just a virus. It’s a template. People paint on it with their own philosophical presumptions, their visions, their deep perceptions about the path of history, and pour onto this template every grievance against the world, every perceived slight and every hope for how the world should be organized... Even now, many people aren’t reading news or looking at data. They are confirming their biases. Our political culture has fully bled – a tsunami of blood – into one of the most essential tasks of civilization: caring for and curing the sick, and hence drowning rationality, science, and medical professionalism, and doing so at the expense of a billion lives. .

I think the author is correct. Some use this crisis to support nationalism all the more, other for universal basic income they were already pushing to put in place. At the end of the day, the care for the sick sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

I think that's sensible because if your dad is high risk & he was infected well the outcome could be grim.
Grim for my mum too - her condition not only has her on immunosuppressants, but her lungs (and kidneys) are basically dying. If dad got infected...ugh.

What I think he's trying to negotiate is to run one of the brain injury facilities, which is in lockdown like our nursing homes. That's a job he used to do with a couple of brain injury specialists and a troop of registrars, and the registrars would be reallocated to high need hospital settings.

The upshot would be that he'd be ridiculously overworked (doing the job of multiple doctors), but in a facility where his risk of exposure would hopefully be minimal. It's impossible to limit exposure to zero for anyone that leaves their house, but I think he's weighing that option up. Because it would free up a number of staff to work in our emergency, short stay and ICU wards, but without him personally having high risk of exposure.

He's due to arrive home tomorrow. What is usually a week/fortnight trip has only taken him a few days, because caravan parks are refusing to admit anyone and he's just been sleeping in truck stops.

It's all pretty grim. I've had at least one nightmare of my parents ending up in the thousand-odd bed temp hospital they're setting up at the showgrounds, surrounded by dying people, not allowed visitors (dramatic much!?). But I'm trying to stay optimistic that the virus is spreading slow enough that if he does get exposed, it will be once they're already trialling some of these potential treatments.

As a health worker he'll be tested on a regular basis - at least, that's what they're saying. Either way, he'll end up helping out somewhere. He has plenty of faults, but I know his history of the places he's agreed to go work in the past. He simply won't be able to stay at home and just watch it on tv - not even for the sake of my mum.

I have mixed feelings about that. But it is what it is. We're in a pandemic, and we don't have enough health workers to go round at the best of times.
