News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Interesting that two of the people in your quote actually are recipients of a doctorate of some sort... whilst of course Greta and David Hogg aren't.

As an aside, I'd rather Greta be on the committee than either of those two "doctors." But that's just a bit of a gripe from me.

Phd's don't make one an expert on science

Amen.

I have no idea what transmitted it originally, how things are going to play out, what can help with symptoms. I don't even know what's best in terms of preventing the spread. But I do think that if states are going to start opening stuff, they need to mandate the wearing of masks and social distancing. Then they have to enforce it. I went to a store today that had a new sign saying that a face covering was required when entering and there were maybe 2 people with masks on.

Yikes, @whiteraven, that's scary. No one at the feed store is wearing masks, which puts me in danger. They may be young, but their dad who owns the place is older than I am. A lot of folks here believe it's a hoax to bring down the government. I guess they can believe it because all the major news sources are now fake news, including Fox.

Some people are now getting charged with terrorism for spreading covid 19 or the fear of covid 19 in the US
The article makes it out to be against free speech, when actually it's not. You can't say bomb on an airplane as the passenger in front of me years ago found out. She was arrested. Spreading Covid intentionally has been declared a terrorist attack so my thought is that if she didn't want to go to jail, find something else to do.

good.

They need to be in jail - there have been way to many instances of this happening lately. I'm pretty sure we are going to have a huge resurgence of covid in the states because people refuse to take it seriously and once the lock down is over they will go right back to business as usual. Sadly the only way to have made people believe the lock down was necessary would have been to do it after the first big waves of deaths. But since they didn't -- it became all about our rights to do whatever we want and who cares what happens to someone else.

Sad commentary on our thought processes

We read the worldometer every day as well. I really feel for folks.

I have been thinking about it and I think that our racism against Chinese people has meant many Australians have seen it as a problem happening to the "Other" and that delayed reaction. Sadly our Australian racism is going to cost us a lot of Australian lives.

I find life confusing WHO has been saying in it's Press Briefings that children need to be protected from the virus since late February/Early March. I even tweeted that to some Australian Journalists. UNESCO said was documenting that 90% of the world's students are in lock down due to preventing the spread SARS-CoV-2. It's gone down to 70% this week.

I spoke to a friend last night and I was shocked she's not wearing a mask, which at her work she could easily do, and has sent the kids back to school. She is high risk. The kids are very high risk. Her partner is skeletal from his illnesses of the last three years. He's got multiple co-morbidities. His Father is a member of the Stolen Generations and he is also skeletal, fighting off cancer, emphysema, & another autoimmune disease as well. Her Mother in Law (whom I am really good friends with) Elderly and frail. I get that they are not well educated and don't understand Science but I was still taken aback.

If they get Covid19 I am going to find it hard to be sorry for them. They have been warned, and they are in a position to keep the kids home, and yet they are putting them at risk. I feel angry about that because I have had a lot to do with those kids. So I am thinking really uncharitable and angry thoughts.

She said to me that she thinks different about things to me at the beginning of the conversation, so I did not push except to say I have been following things closely, and that has been a big part of my life., and it was worrying that the child deaths reported overseas and I was concerned at the lack of coverage by that Australian media is not accurately reporting about SARS-CoV-2. That young people without pre-existing conditions are stroking out.

We had a really good conversation as both our partners have been ill and are recovering. So there was a lot of discussion of gratitude. But I felt in shock after I got off the phone. They don't have Critical Literacy skills so they are not looking outside of the Murdoch media which has agendas.

They are moving among really vulnerable populations but the have no idea of the consequences. It really worries me.

I feel like the defence is just quoting the president about how it's a myth anyways. Doesnt exist ergo no damage done.

Again- seriously glad I don't live in the states. I mean you get that every other nation is laughing at you right? at the same time they're crying?

What I'm mostly annoyed at is how covid has delayed massive innovative technologies: like, a flu vaccine that covers immunity from all flus, and clean energy. Innovations that come from normal, intelligent American revolutionists like the Bill and Melinda Gates foundations. They've stalled, because they need collaboration from other countries like the UK and China and can't get off the ground now thanks to covid..... that's annoying.

How many years are those delayed now?

Every single one of us knows. And as with everything else in the US, there are two and only two ways people react to that. 50% of us hate it and want him out. 50% of us love it, because it just proves that America is getting greater every day.

The latter group tends to deny the impact of Covid and wants to open things up ASAP. A majority of those folks live in rural places that haven't been hit very hard, though, so they don't see much impact. FYI, they also hold a huge built-in advantage in our upcoming presidential election because votes in our more rural states count roughly three times more than votes in more populated states.

While I understand the intent behind the quote... that generalization in conclusion is both flat out wrong and not going on in reality.

I'm in a country that has traditionally rather cynical view of the US, legacy of WW2 end's histories and then its former regime, and literally nobody I know even where usually antipathic had that reaction.

That's not even starting on people who usually *don't* hold any anti-American views, the opposite.

Ditto, people of any other nations I talk to response?
Nobody went all Haha Merika. Stupid gits.

People went like, Humanitarian disaster and a tragedy. And very few or not small numbers, but still careless people are making it worse. How can we help, or use that example to not have the same mistakes in our own communities?

People abroad don't celebrate tragedies.

And abusive f*cks who do would do it on any chance, they don't need a pandemy-striken first nation to be their usual douchebag.

I looked into this a while ago. Apparently you can say things like this, (fire in a theatre, bomb on a plane, ect, ect). The crime is not in the word being spoken, but the reaction it causes from the people in the vicinity.
Your 1st amendment makes the banning of any specific word unconstitutional.
Any speech that incites a panic is not protected by the constitution. The specific words matter less than the context they're used in.

Now up here in Canada, we have compelled speech. This is arguably worse, as you can lose your livelihood for not using a word as dictated to you by someone else.
Even silence can damn you up here.
Speak the party line or face the consequences, that's the Canadian way apparently. Makes me want to vomit.
Look up bill C-16 if you are interested in what giving up your constitutional rights can look like.

I don't like that people are rushing out in big crowds as they are, I think that's a bad idea. I do however applaud the people that are fighting for their rights. They really are trying to do the American people a favour, even if their approach is a little misguided. IMHO

Pardon the OT: So I read up your mentioned Bill C-16, @Neverthesame, in both English and French, in case I'm missing nuances in either...

And I'm not seeing where your 'if you want to see what giving up your rights looks like' note comes from.

Can you give examples of what do you mean?

Because from what I'm reading, it's a very no brainer bill saying people are not free to commit hate acts & hate speech on gender and orientation minorities other people. Among other reasons, but gender was the latest (2016) addition to an existing legislative.

A.k.a. a good thing.
That doesn't actually limit anyone's rights, but affirms them.

Unless you had something else in mind...?

Hmmm.... sorry, wasn't very clear about this. I didn't mean laughing about the tragic way the pandemic is unfolding in the states. I don't think anyone's laughing or finds humour in any of that.

Not sure how to explain better what I do mean though. Not laughing as in "hahahahah" though.
