ADHD ADHD / PTSD

They were screening hard for ADHD.
It's not necessarily ADHD. It's the underlying problem called Executive Dysfunction. Most people with PTSD have it to some degree. It can be full on ADHD. But usually it shows in some form of cognitive dysfunction. If you pour OJ in your coffee, put the Corn Flakes in the dishwasher, or if you have moments where you know something and can not remember it or you spend 10 minutes looking for the mobile phone that's in your hand.....you may have Executive Dysfunction.

Once I recognized what it was Cognition became a marker of how active my PTSD is. It's like math - Cognition>PTSD, and Cognition<PTSD.

Sorry for my delay replying here, everyone - I was finding it difficult to focus on this thread (ha!) and then haven't been online much h and then forgot I posted it! Just going to re-read all the posts now and write some responses. I appreciate you all taking the time to respond and sorry to just disappear off without acknowledging anything!

You don’t, there is overlap
I think I am going to need to become more at peace with this concept! The idea of not knowing what is what/which is which feels a bit stressful. But I think getting really focused on trying to separate the two out and identify each one different is probably going to create more tree, ultimately. So, I need to remember this.

I’d definitely bring it up so the evaluator has a complete picture.
Thanks. Yes, I've actually now booked an appointment for an ADHD assessment, but deliberately chose a psych who does a lot of work with women and trauma and who's very experienced with PTSD.

Good luck, I hope whatever happens brings you peace.
Than you, I appreciate it.

Sometimes I just have to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks
Ha! Yeah...

For real or just because?

Hmm...just because. So, yeah...as you say....it's probably just noise that I shouldn't engage with.

my takeaway from all that is, "don't worry about which file cabinet other people put you in. treat the symptoms."

Yeah, this sounds like something I need to try to adopt.

steadying support while you find what works for you.

Thanks, I appreciate it. And I'm sorry if you were ever described as 'one of those girls' :(

knowing what it is and what needs to be treated? Means you get treated rather than stumbling around not knowing.

A diagnoses is a description - nothing more.

Wise words, thanks. It's helpful for me to be able to come back to these posts when my mind starts running away with me and I'm feeling anxious about it.

As far as separating different symptoms of ADHD vs. PTSD, I’d say learn about both individually, but recognize that the overlap will be huge if not impossible to decipher since it’s all in one person.
Makes sense, @Roland thanks. I'm glad you had a good experience with your evaluation. I spent ages researching providers, and feel I've chosen the psych very carefully, so I'm hoping for a positive experience too, whatever the outcome

And @Tinyflame - thanks for your posts too. There is a lot there and it's difficult for me to pick out bits to quote and respond to as it was all so resonant! I will check out those resources you mention. Thanks very much!

Best of luck with it! It’s not easy finding a good psychologist but well worth the time.

it doesn't really seem worthy of sorrow. of the stigmatic insults humanity has hurled, this one is easier than most to reframe.

one of those girls who thinks for herself.
one of those girls who can and will overcome.
one of those girls who has worked with less.

hit me with your best shot, cupcake. fire away. . .

Best of luck to you! I have ADHD and dyslexia and PTSD. Yes, there are overlaps specifically between ADHD and PTSD like there are with dyslexia and ADHD. personally, I feel like I’ve been able to distinguish what causes what and like he said, avoidance was one that overlaps as well as anxiety.

for me personally having both it was hard to digest. ours are a bit switched around as I was diagnosed with ADHD before I was diagnosed with PTSD. Being diagnosed with ADHD what validating for me because it explained a lot of things, whereas PTSD was a hard pill to swallow. but my experience could be similar or totally different than yours. I wish you luck, even though it was validating for me I thought man this just made my life harder, and then been diagnosed with PTSD felt like dang another slap in the face.

I accidentally hit the reply button, but I anyway, I learned to cope with having that diagnosis and learning the differences of the overlapping symptoms and how to manage the overlapping symptoms. Whenever you find out you’re Neurodivergent, it’s a lot to take in. I’ve never actually talked to anyone who’s had both like myself, so if you have any questions, let me know. I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, when I was 19. And I was diagnosed with PTSD when I was 30 if you’re in need for a laugh, they have a ton of funny ADHD memes, because sometimes when I feel down about stuff like that, I try to find someway to smile about it and also know if there’s other people out there.
