New Here
I was diagnosed with PTSD several years ago, but little did I know that all these crazy quirks about me fit into the criteria of symptoms. How enlightening and depressing to find that out. The initial trauma was caused by 11 years of sexual abuse, from which at the age of 14 I had a baby. During those 11 years, I was manipulated, tortured, neglected, and abused regularly. Perhaps I will feel more comfortable sharing events at a later point, but it's all I can do to open up to tell you this much. My trust level is low, which has plagued me most of my life.

I raised my son convincing myself he was someone else's, not my abuser's, but when he turned 25 there came a time he had to know who his real father was. Unbeknown to me, my son sought him out, which was easy to do since my mother was still in contact with the man. (Talk about complete betrayal!) My abuser already knew where my son was, and me too.

I was involved in a car wreck and had a heart attack in the same week, so my PTSD is out of control now. I was in water when I was having my heart attack, so now I'm deathly afraid of running water, which I'm not facing. We recently purchased a new car, but I’m terrified of driving again; I haven’t ventured outside the immediate neighborhood. Right now I don't think I could even do that.

My house was burglarized once, and my car twice. Because of that, the agoraphobia is something with which I’ve learned to live. I am not good at spur-of-the moment outings, but if I have notice, I'll go if conditions are right.

Before my heart attack....before I admitted to my son who his real father was....before the wreck, I had a normal life. I want it back so bad. Surely things cannot go on this way much longer without driving me mad.

I'm on medication, but I don't think it’s helping. In order to change meds, though, I have to go to the doctor more often, but once again, the agoraphobia and fear of cars rears their ugly heads. I know I need to back back in therapy, I don't have the energy to get dressed. I feel drained all the time; the anxieties wear me out.

I take comfort in knowing I was a good mom under trying conditions. My grown child says I was anyway.

The first time I got counseling was because my 17-year old niece committed suicide. Her father then did the same, as his mother had before him. Suicide has affected my family in some of the worst ways, and I'm just trying not to add to the numbers.

So that's my story. Is it too optimistic of me to think that by this time next year I won’t have all these issues? Because some days, hoping that the optimism pays off is all that gets me through.

(((Jana))) Well done on your first post. You did a great job. Hopefully the next posts will be a little easier. Don't feel pressured to tell your story before you are ready, just take it slowly.

I think your optimism is fantastic mainly because you see a this time next year. I cannot guarentee all the issues will ever go away but hopefully over time and with professional help you will be able to take control.

Living with PTSD is never easier, recovery is tough. Aim for very small baby steps and reward/nurture yourself as you achieve these. I know at times my daily achievement has been to get out of bed, showered and dressed. Please try and see your doctor again and then to be referred to a therapist.

Look around the forum, read the posts and articles on the home page. One thing about the forum is that you are no longer alone. There are people all around the word who are now at your side. I feel so at home here, I've made friends who offer understanding, compassion and support. I hope you will find that as well.

Take care

Hi Jana

Welcome to the forum.

We all know how hard that first step can be, so you have done well with it straight off.

Trust is an issue we all understand so no one will push you to tell anything you are not comfortable with. Just take your time with everything, maybe having a good look round to start with.

You will soon feel like you have been here for ages.

Thank you...I force myself to think "by this time next year", it keeps me going . I dont know what Id do if I ever let go of that.

Im finding some stories of people who grew up under horrible conditions too....so Im not alone.

Thank you KP

I had difficulty as a child too, haven't gotten to the point here where I'm ready to talk about it but I know how hard it can be. I'm also currently dealing with the aftermath of a suicide...I know this can be devastating.

You did a great job for your first post! I'm glad you were comfortable enough to talk that much, sometimes it is easier online I think. I hope you find healing here. There are truly wonderful people on this site, as I'm sure you will find out.

Hugs, Robin

Hi Jana and welcome to the forum.

You surely have been through a lot.

You'll find good friends here and support; I am new here also and just started therapy. My trauma was not like yours however a lot of the feelings (or not feelings!) are the same. Everybody here is so kind! So take care and keep coming back, read and work your way around, you'll get the hang of it quickly.

I'm glad you're here.

Jana,

Writing about our stuff (I hope that term isn't offensive to you) is very painful but it is also very healing. And being anonymous helps us to open up, lay it all down and eventually walk away with a much lighter bundle.

Welcome!
