I walked into my T's office one day, in tears and quite the mess. As I bent down to tie my shoe, he said "while you do that, close your left eye."
I did, and when I came up, the tears had stopped, and I couldn't remember what I was crying about.
It's something about the right hemisphere of the brain containing many emotions, especially the 'bad' ones. So, covering your eye 'rests' the emotional part of the brain, and lets the left side be more prominent. That's the side where logic 'lives'. (I know so little about the brain, so this is probably not the best explanation.) Apparently part of the reason we get 'too' emotional, or full of 'bad' emotion, is because our 'right' brains are being dominate. Hope I haven't confused anyone.
I decided to get serious and experiment with that theory. I got an eye patch, and began wearing it 2-3 minutes a day, and built up to 30 minutes. It was AMAZING after a few days, how different it made me think and feel. Not right away, but soon, issues about my csa began to sort of 'fall in place', in order. I began to realize the impact of the incidences on my entire life....and being. And how I was 'changed' before I was ever able to be 'me'.
I was able to finally tell my T, and eventually was able to confront my abuser...my older brother. I was able to 'take my power back' and the healing began. I credit that progress to covering my left eye on a regular basis.
Even now, if I wear it for a few minutes, I am calmer and less emotional. My T taught it to me for when I get anxious, but I, being the person I am, took it a little farther. :)
If you decide to try this. Don't do it while: driving, cleaning, or anything that requires coordination. I found moving to some music (used to call it dancing), or folding laundry. You'd be surprised how much brain power is needed just to do that one-eyed.
I'd be interested if anyone tries it on their panic/anxiety and whether you saw a difference.
