Does Anyone Garden?

I thought I'd resurrect this thread, as it is spring where I am and I have been planting for the last month or so. I have some lovely Asia lilies and daylilies blooming now. I just bought a handful of dwarf conifers to try my hand at a mini Japanese garden in a planter! I am very excited about this and hope it will succeed.

Hubs says I have a cianide thumb. I can't seem to make anything grow except weeds. I grew up on a farm with delish salads all from the garden. I wish I could grow more. I only planted wildflowers and cherry tomatoes this year. This is the first year that I've actually planted in the ground and not in flower beds. On our property we have a very mature black walnut tree and our neighbors have told us they have difficulty growing much of anything in the soil since the roots of the tree "poison" it. We're giving tomatoes a shot. Just in case it doesn't work, I also planted them in a container. I'd love to plant some green peppers too.

This is the first year I have been successful at keeping plants alive! Did you know in 100 degree weather, you have to water your plants?

I usually forget, but this year I put them right by my front porch, so I pass them every day and stop to give them water.

We have a very large garden. It is necessary, in so many ways. The very fact that food prices have become so high makes me want to grow and preserve as much food as I can. Not to mention the fact that homegrown vegetables taste a million times better.

It's also very therapeutic. Preparing the garden beds requires digging, which is a great way to exercise, and fun. The planting of seeds gives you hope for the future. Even weeding, though boring and tedious, gives you time to sit with your thoughts in a comforting environment.

I also love the habitat that is created. In addition to vegetables, we plant lots of flowers, too. That attracts lots of butterflies and bees. There are some pests in the garden, but they've never done too much damage, and I don't use poison.

We've also planted over 200 trees on our 5 acres, in the last couple of years. I want to create my own little forest.

Nam, some plants can tolerate the chemicals secreted by black walnuts! Try hostas if it is real shady, or daylilies if there is sun. You can also try phlox or wisteria.

My grass and my bonsai are still alive, and I am energized by this victory! I am hoping I can keep them going for the rest of the summer.

My tomatoes in the ground are dying. I do have some in containers though. I have raspberries that sometimes bear fruit. Other than that, I have a huge crop of poison ivy! Why, oh why can't poison ivy be sensitive to black walnut trees?

We're in drought mode in SC. So even watering my container tomatoes makes me feel guilty. We had a 2 minute shower last night! We walked out in it to celebrate. Gardening has always been a "if I feel like it" kind of thing or I would lose interest. But this year, I have found out when I get too anxious, I go out and pull some weeds, water, walk around, etc. I burn off some energy and work out my panic. This works about 80% of the time. Maybe that is why I blew that money on flowers! LOL :thumbs-up

I totally second these thoughts. I'm on a ton of meds, but since I started the garden this spring, my husband says that's the best one :)

I think I'll start a gardening social group!

Just to let readers of this thread know, I did start a gardening social group this morning.

I have to let you know, Booknerd, that I tried to invite you, but the forum thingy/whatever wouldn't let me. I think you have to be out of moderation first - hope that happens soon! So until it does, please consider yourself invited in advance, okay?

Hodge, I want in... Hubby has been sorta gardening (meaning he planted but I have been caring) I hope to jump in full for Fall garden though I may kill it :)

Hi Veiled!! I just sent you an official invitation :)

I thought this is a public group so that anyone could join without an invitation, if they're not in moderation, that is. Do you know if that's true or how this works?
