Ouchies! I hate shin splints, I hope it is nothing worse, they are bad enough!

Many years ago I was taught an exercise to prevent shin splints. It seems to have worked, but this information is old. It might be wise to consult a Physical Therapist again to see if this is still the recommended practice.

The exercise is to lift the foot, point the toes down, then rotate the foot both a clockwise and counter-clockwise until tired, then do the other foot.

This is for prevention only, not healing from them as best I know.

I hope you have a speedy recovery!

I went to the doctors today but had to see a locum. He didn't seem to know what I was on about. He checked my leg and said, 'It's not swollen anymore and I can't see anything wrong with it. Just take some Ibuprofen.'

He didn't move my foot, advise me on exercise or send me to x-ray of physio. I had to push him to give me a referral to the podiatrist but I got it.

I find doctors so triggering so I took my H with me. Even he was baffled by how much the doctor didn't know! The doctor told me not to walk so far. Well, I'll do that until it feels better but I'll take advise from the podiatrist before this doctor. Poor chap Knew nothing!

I'm still in pain but I've got my leg strapped up for support and now I'll just have to wait until I get better. I did download some exercises especially for shin splints and I've already started them - ouch!

I'll get my eldest lad to cook tea for me tonight. He brought some oak smoked smoked salmon back from the Outer Hebredes in Scotland yesterday so we will be having a bit of luxury tonight!

I am doing back bends in my yoga practice and yesterday practiced quite intensely and woke up this morning with a VERY stiff and sore back. I am hoping that I will be able to " gently" stretch it out. I have only injured myself a few times doing yoga and running ( serious back injury running) and I have learned to sllllloowwwww it down. I have been doing yoga for 5 years and am just picking up backbends now....yet, I am in quite a bit of discomfort now! Good shoes make all of the difference! Its al worth it! Namaste. beth

I've been doing the physio and my leg is much better. My H wants me to go for a walk on Thursday but that will only be a week since my injury. I might talk him into doing something gentler like going to the beach.

I am being urged by my doctor to stop smoking and start getting more exercise. I find this to be a huge pain in the arse, as I have been sitting on my duff, smoking, and playing on the computer for literally years (since becoming disabled) and now, find that I am quite exercise intolerant and have to start really slow.:(

They tell me a walk in nature is good for depression but I can't seem to motivate myself to do it. Today however, I am making it a point to back off the cigars and take a nice walk outside. Doesn't seem like much but it is a huge deal to me....Could really use some support and encouragement in this area.

With CFS, being out of shape, and being a long time smoker, I find getting into shape to be a daunting challenge, one that I'm not sure I am ready for, but this is something I need to do for my health.

HI LH,

Wow, good on you for having a go at walking.

I have had CFS so I know how hard it can be. Some days are like walking through mud and it can take me ages just to get up the stairs. Other days I can do a good 8 miles without loosing my breath! At other times mys asthma makes it difficult and at other times it is my knee or my back! (I don't think there is much left of me to be honest!).

My husband is my biggest encouragement. He is so patient and takes me to the most amazing places! I take my camera, a packed lunch and a small rucksack and wear a pair of good hiking boots. We stop often because I'm struggling but we use it to admire the view or chat to other walkers. I take my binoculars and sit and bird watch too.

Motivation is a big thing with me, the lack of it I mean. Sometimes my H says,'let's go for a walk,' and I say, 'Oh, do we have to!'

But I love being out in places where I can see so many wonderful things that I would miss in the car. Like this one in Parbold, Lancashire, UK. The Fairy Glen. If I didn't go I would have missed this shot:
025 Fairy Glen and Sprodley Brook.webp

Give it a go LH and let me know how you get on. x

I hike outside with my dog in places much like the picture above; it's been life changing and introduced a level of sanity into my life. My dog chases squirrels while I cry and talk about things with god. Lots of times, I just enjoy the scenery and fresh air! beth

Same here Beth. I read a study that says that the green of nature is good for lifting depression and I believe it to be true.

I spend a lot of time putting the world to rights, processing things that are going on in my life, taking deep breaths and letting the stress go.

I have spent time crying and sometimes shouting at God too. He doesn't mind, he's used to my rants!

My H wants me to go for a walk on Thursday but that will only be a week since my injury. I might talk him into doing something gentler like going to the beach.
Walking bad; beach good.;) I recommend you let your shinsplints recover fully, or as close to fully as you can stand before walking on them much again.

LionHeart. Way to go. I too really struggle with getting off my duff. It is the depression, and I know it is better if I exercise, but I seriously lack motivation. My dog gets me going most days. Today I am going to hit the woods with my son. I want to see if the spring wild flowers are up. @CraftyCath, you inspired me to take along my camera. Thanks!
