Dr. Who -- Help!

Hi all,

Are there any "Dr. Who" fans on here by any chance?

I would like to watch it and was browsing ebay and amazon yesterday and found lots of seemingly different Dr. Who series. Some seemed to be older, some more recent. Different actors... I have no clue what the differences are and don't know where to start or what to watch.

What I would like to watch is a version that is nice to watch, in the sense that it's modern enough so you don't crack up every time a techie thing happens and it's totally ridiculous. So, for me, the original Star Trek series featuring Captain Kirk is over and out, because it's just too old and I can't take it seriously anymore, i.e. imagine it and drift of in phantasyland.

So, I do want Dr. Who to be the original story-wise but maybe in a more modern version, true to the original though. Can anyone suggest what I should get?

(ImdB: The 11 Doctors of Doctors who) put this on your search engine. This should tell you the years the episodes where shown and give you an idea as to where to start and the order of the doctors from start to finish. I have watch this show since childhood. Saw it in the late 60's as a child so Jon Pertwee was the Doctor back then. Looking forward to watching the 12 th Doctor soon on TV. Hope this helps. If you want more info. My suggestion would be to start from the reboot in 2005 with Christopher Ecclestone and watch through till you're up to date, then if you're desperate for more go back and watch from the beginning. My sisters found they preferred the David Tennant onwards but all in all if you include Christopher Ecclestone everything will make sense and fit together nicely.

From what you wrote, I was wondering: Are all those 11 doctors one series? I mean, there are no remakes or anything? They're all subsequent seasons/episodes?

Dr. Who started early mid 1960' s and is still going today. It did stop for awhile but is back strong as ever. You go by the doctors (he is a Time Lord from Galifray who regenerates hence the different doctors.) So series one would be The first Doctor and so forth.

:) Yes, the Doctor has never been repeated, they're all a straight storyline but with a distinct separation - before and after the "Time War". It may seem confusing but I would recommend anyone new to start to the reboot (after the Time War) as you don't need to know to older generations, everything is explained and covered. Also this even more so because you find outdated effects difficult to take seriously. Although the whole show has an element of whimsy that makes it not out of place. The very old episodes are also very slow to follow and now there's a nice and fun pace, humour and more modern special fx!

Since the reboot there have been three but Matt Smith is soon to be departing :cry: in lieu of Peter Capaldi. The interesting thing is as long as you start with the first introduction of a companion everything is fairly well explained. I first watched an episode from the reboot in series 5 on the iPlayer when sick, I then finished series 5 and when back to series 1(reboot) and watched it all through. But I have watched a fair amount of the older stuff too. Epic and fun stuff, super geeky and awesome!!

I don't watch it. But know a little. The doctor doesn't ever die, he regenerates into a different doctor. Thus being a nifty way to change actors.

prime_no they aren't, over the years as the program has developed there have been 11 (or so!!!...) Doctors so far.

To all Dr Who fans on the 23rd November 75 TV networks have agreed to simultaneously broadcast the 50th Anniversary of Dr Who - Can't wait. I know who the 12th Doctor will be ;) Peter Capaldi. (hope I am sticking to forum rules).

Oh yes Christopher Eccleston played the ninth Doctor in 2005, from him onwards the show has been brilliant, the storyline from this Doctor onwards is related and intertwined with all of the subsequent storylines, a few twists and turns, surprises & the acting & costumes are amazing. I highly recommend it, if you do start watching this from 2005 you are going to be seriously busy & probably won't get much else done!:D

If you search on the net for the series from 2005 I am pretty sure it is not under "Season .." just the year and episodes, that might help in your search. Encyclopaedias are also a good source of information. They also made some "Specials" also related to the storyline which were good, I think they are showing one over here at Christmas.

I understand you wanting some more realistic techie stuff, but you made me nostalgic for the original Doctor Who programmes/films where the Daleks were made out of cardboard, the cybermen were obviously people in silver suits wearing gas masks and the special effects were flashing lights and a bit of dry ice. These were before my time, but I've seen them and loved them. But then, I'm more into kitsch than sci fi!



This must be one of the longest running series there is. What are people talking about, different actors? The Doctor is real! It's just that he's a Time Lord who changes his human form.
