Armed Robbery Aftermath

A close friend of mine is 11 years old. 6 months ago her father died and five days after his death her house was burgled by armed robbers. She, her mother, brother, grandmother and aunt were old blindfolded, had their wrists tied (so tightly they bled) and a gun was put to her mother's head, threatening to be shot if she did not open their safe. They have since moved into a less isolated neighbourhood, but the noticeable after affects of such an event are that she cannot be left alone, especially not at home, cannot go upstairs by herself, is agitated when playing hide and seek and is terrified of the dark. What do you recommend could help?

Can she seek professional help? Symptoms at six months out indicate that professional help is most likely needed.

Has she told an adult about how these things bother her? Talking with her mom or grandma would be a great start. There might be someone at her school that could help find a therapist. A grown-up needs to know about this, it's important for your friend to get help.
