I have read in a few places about the idea that Post-traumatic Stress Disorder should be renamed to Post-Traumatic Stress Injury and I've found it very interesting, including the concept that as we recover, the injury leaves behind a healed scar - which I personally find to be an accurate description of how I see being healed. Mostly I'm opening this thread to discuss people views on this idea and whether people disagree or agree but also because I wanted to share these charts comparing a typical psychiatric illness (in this instance Paranoia) to the Hypervigilant aspect PTSD.

(The chart does not work well on this site, so here is the link instead, you'll find the information I mean under the subheading differences between mental illness and psychiatric injury: http://medicalwhistleblowernetwork.jigsy.com/ptsd-injury-not-disease)

So... Discuss!

Kas,

That does make sense... I do believe that all of us who suffers PTSD does have scar and can be challenge to heal from it.

Sometimes the term look better and make sense than others.

I have two books that I am recommend to read..

Waking the Tiger and EMDR - Unfortunately, I have not finish the book yet.

I like this. Helps give permission to believe that what is happening to me is not my fault, even though I often feel as if it is. The language we use to describe personal difficulties is so important in terms of shaping how we view ourselves and how others view us. "Mental Illness" carries terrible and blaming connotations in our culture, whereas "injury" does not--in fact, the opposite; it often evokes compassion. I look forward to watching the lecture on the website. Thanks for starting this thread!

Hope4Now-

There are more education to people about PTSD is needed.

Reason why I say this because I felt that it is hard to have someone who is able to comply with empathy and try their best to understand.

Sometimes we faced with some saying statement such as oh that's past, oh you need learn to overcome fear, etc. We are coping it and does know that.

Know what I am saying?

I see it both ways and this is why I created the thread from the aspect of recovery and in the way
I look at PTSD, I see it as a severe (disabling) psychiatric injury, in time it will heal but that scar will remain and the injured area will remain weaker, however still healed. But then there's this:
"It's ONLY an injury! Why aren't you healed yet?!?"
and the idea that Insurance wouldn't help cover costs towards it and/or welfare payments might not wouldn't be made for it. The thing I don't get is if someone suffered extreme physical injury that would not be treated the same way - it's back to anything in the brain being stigmatised I suppose. Anything short of complete mental retardation just doesn't count as a disability when it comes to mental health.
Helps give permission to believe that what is happening to me is not my fault, even though I often feel as if it is.
I feel the same - that it is my fault, however for me the PTSD diagnosis helped a little and I think the rest is my own perception and no matter the name I would still have that blame for myself.
someone who is able to comply with empathy and try their best to understand.
At the heart of it, that's what we all need isn't it? To be handled tactfully and not adding insult to injury (or disorder).

Kas,

Yes - I feel that the empathy should be there and ask what the suffer would like carer to do for them.

Not mean to sounds I'm off the point but it might be relevant. A person I was seeing also has ptsd as well, she would say this as lot of time "You do not understand my PSTD" or she would say "You do not understand my feelings"

I do have PTSD as well, how I do is show empathy and asked this person what she would like me to do for her but of course, never got the response. Instead of non-responsive to this request, start to point on many issues and being off point on that.

I know that there are some people would say that as excuses but how can we do with this? COPING SKILLS is that what we need and the support of others who is suffers or carer (or both) to reinforce the coping skills.

At end, the person throw me off on the curb and I realized that I do have coping skills while the person doesn't and keep on relying on PTSD. Maybe I don't understand but the whole point is.. Empathy and what should provide.

Am I making any sense? I'm tempted to make new thread on this later.

Thanks @Hashi - usually I check first, this time I didn't, I hope that doesn't offend anyone but thanks for posting it up - I'll have a nose through it now! :)

I liked the idea of some discussion around the subject but definitely don't want anything like the incredibly heated debate on that link, if I evoked any of the strong feelings similar to those on that thread I hold my hands up, apologise profusely and back away. **eeek**

I wholeheartedly agree it's an injury. It always depends upon where you start. PTS is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.

What's different are the many different ways people CHOOSE to cope. I personally don't coddle my PTS. Nor will I ever. I view it as the road to Shambala! :)

It's an injury from unenlightened soul(s) trying desperately for you to be as miserable as them. I've said it many times FTS! LOL

PTS comes in many forms. I was born into a pathological family dynamic. Some are born is war torn and/or starving countries..the list is endless. What do they do? We adapt. You're not born with PTS...it happens to you. It can and does give you a greater sense of life itself. A deeper meaning of life itself. Question for everyone. Anytime you see a tragedy ..what happens?
