New Here
I worked emergency response for 11 years with MediFlight, and went on disability in November of 2012. After going on disability, I began having these horrible flashbacks when I would hear a helicopter overhead. Sometimes there will be periods of time I don't remember and it scares me. I'm easily startled at sudden sounds too and I almost jump out of my skin, and wake up at night screaming. Will this pass?

Hi, welcome to the forums. I'm sort for what you are experiencing.

None of us can really give a prognosis online. In general, the kinds of things you describe often get a lot better with treatment. It generally takes work and time in therapy to process the trauma and to learn grounding skills to use in the meantime to help the body learn it's safe now.

Losses of time can be due to trauma and also can be due to various medical conditions. If you haven't already, seeing a doctor for a medical work up might be a good idea. If it's due to PTSD, working with a therapist can help tremendously too.

Wow, you gave a lot to so many people in crisis and saved lives too! It is such an honor to meet you.:D

My Mom and Dad both worked at ER and in intensive care. Dad was a medic in the war. Our family pilot friend did medvac and rescue. I have a friend that works in the cancer ward and know a few Drs. So I can only offer what I saw happen with them.

All at some point (of those mentioned in my circle), suffered reoccurring nightmares and Flash Backs. Some sought a good therapist to find out what was connect to the triggers and they stated it helped. Some of those folks mentioned did not seek assistance due to their standing or reputation among their peers.

Watching life and death scenarios is about as real as it gets and they couldn't allow for the processing of their emotions fully at that time. They had a job to do (as you did), always short staffed, things going wrong, drama, trauma and sleep deprivation. Adrenaline ran high. And as you sadly know, not every patient could be saved. Watching that happen and the grief of those patients families tore their hearts apart over time.

I do not know if my offer has any value to you concerning your question, but I do want to state, you paid a big price to help others. Thank you for being you. Your heart, soul, body and mind had to be top notch, engaged and certain sounds meant getting your game on. Triggers.

In my humble opinion, my extended family that went to therapy healed faster than those tough(?) members, who continued to stuffed it down and just medicated or self-medicated. No reference or comment towards anything outside of this situation. This is just what I observed in this group within my medical family.

Take what you need and leave the rest. Hope it helps a little.

I too, was dx with ptsd some years ago... when I was hospitalized for major depression (currently on zoloft) and self harm ideation, in 2005. I startle easily, ever since I can remember, and most recently I've been experiencing flashbacks (I believe). Although, I was taught about self soothing and grounding techniques. .. it is just so hard at times. It really is bothersome to go through. About 2 months returned to counseling. Although she is helpful, I have an incredibly difficult time opening up.

Thank you Recovery4Me. Over the past some years, I've seen different therapists/counselors.... hate to say it.. I still have a hard time. Not sure if it's an office setting vs casual setting or what. Idk

There's an old step saying, "Takes as long to walk out of the Forrest as it did to walk into it." Be patient with yourself as the journey to heal is not a race...it's a process.
