Prazosin Causing Insomnia?

I'm taking prazosin and no other psych related meds. Prazosin is actually not a mind altering med per say, it's a blood pressure med and used for prostate hypertrophy. Because it's an adrenergic blocker it lessens the body's symptoms to adrenaline. Takes some of the adrenaline edge off of day to day ptsd adrenaline related symptoms. Larger doses (10mg) at night inhibit the massive ptsd related adrenaline release we experience that makes nightmares so constant and crippling.

All that being said it will not make you sleepy and while you're increasing the dose it's common to have flushed skin and at times a pounding heart rate. (Renin system reaction) your body will get used to it, it took me a few weeks. I take 2mg twice a day and 10mg at bedtime. I use an extra 5mg dose if I'm having a bad flashback day, it helps with my adrenaline related hallucinations. Max dose of Prazosin per day is 20mg. I take 50mg benadryl to help me fall asleep.

Hope that helps somehow!

It's all really balancing out nicely! The side effects of the Prazosin are fading well and my doctor increased the dose today.

Wish I had made the choice to try it sooner.

@Panda Bear , my experience with the clonidine was so similar to what yo...

There is a way your Dr can send your DNA sample & receive an individualized report with medication reccomendations & which meds to avoid. My report matched my previous medication failures. The company couldn't have known this (it was 1st visit to new Dr & hadn't gotten through all the previous meds). I didn't see this dr, my Dr is in a different state

Can it cause insomnia? I can't sleep worth beans! I'm awake 3-4hrs after taking it and then only get 4-5hrs of sleep before I'm awake at the ass crack of dawn and can't go back to sleep! No nightmares...just awake!

I'm still on 2mg and working up the dose. But the inability to fall asleep is getting worse.
Same deal. I took it years ago and it worked beautifully. Now for some reason it's keeping me awake.

I stopped prazosin too. I had to keep changing to dose. If i stayed on one dose it stops working. then i had to decrease and the nightmares got freaky scary bad then up the dose again. There is no way i could stabilize on it and yes it made me MORE dizzy.

I dont take prazosin anymore.
