I've heard little bits about Pell, if I've had the radio on in the car. So it is reaching as far as Britain, and people like me who usually avoid the lamestream news.
Roman Catholicism seems to have distinct local flavours. I know that the control freak authoritarianism, and intense use of a very prudish guilt, that the Irish church uses ax a tool to control people, came as a shock for an Italian friend.
It seems to be the churches with their roots in Ireland, that are having the biggest abuse scandals coming out; Ireland itself, Britain, Oz, America (especially the areas with big populations of Irish descent, like Boston).
Ireland in the late nineties and two thousands, had some incredible revelations. News of cover ups even brought a government down ( doesn't make much difference, the main difference between the two biggest parties in Ireland is, when one is in power, the other one isn't).
There were big public enquiries which published reports, if you are interested, you can probably download the reports of enquiries into abuse in the diocese of Dublin, and the report into the diocese of Ferns. I think there were others too.
Though be careful of retraumatization if you find yourself drawn to material which is close to your own trauma.
