Has the same etymology as cell. Kill/chill/cill/kell/cell (all pronounced with hard c) meant like a little hut where a monk or holy person lived—later known as a church or chapel.

When Robert Hooke peered through his newly-invented compound microscope he thought the square-shaped air-filled sections on a thin slice of cork bark looked like monk’s cells, and the name stuck. Only plants have regular square-shaped cells, but animal cells weren’t discovered until later.
