Always thought of myself as a pretty fair mechanic. Started with go-carts and then up to motorcycles, then tearing them down and repairing them. Triumphs, BSAs, even a Norton. Then on to Hondas, had an in-line four 750 that was a screamer and dependable to boot.
You get cocky and think that you know it all. I've had this 96' Honda Shadow 1100cc for years now. And for years the thing has been a bitch to start if it has sat for any time. I've thumbed the choke over far as it would go and acted liked it wasn't doing anything.
So, you take the seat off and stuff a rag down in the air intake and it fires and soon is warmed up and you put the seats back on. Pain in the ass.
Well this time I had the rag stuffed in and it was running real rough and I reached up and pulled the choke off and hit a certain point and the RPMs shot up, it started purring, almost sucked the rag down the intake. Ol' bright eyes here takes a good close look at the choke knob. There is a little arrow pointing at me.
The two brain cells I possess suddenly arrive at the conclusion that one is supposed pull the choke knob toward me, not thumb it away to engage the choke! If you guys knew how many times I've the seat off the thing to start it....
I think the correct phrase here would be, "sharp as a marble".
