News Another Shooting In The Us

yes, me too Gizmo, there is no reason why a civilian needs an assault rifle.

Actually, unless you are a hunter/gamekeeper there is no real reason to have any gun. Protection? mmmmm questionable, from what? someone else with a gun. Take away that and no need for protection using guns.

I agree with hunting for food, not for fun, but it has to be fair.

The only thing I like about USA Laws is that you can protect your property by any means. Over here you have to prove your life was in danger before you attacked the intruder. That really sucks.

I hope thing will change on both sides of the water :)

best wishes
Saffy :)

Since this thread is about shootings, there is another point just beyond gun control. In each of the mass shootings, the shooter has been mentally unstable. As you research the background of each individual, there are many who feared this type of behavior. However, in this country, it is almost impossible to have someone involuntarily committed. In addition, privacy laws prevent information from being shared from such people as law enforcement.

The same thing goes for areas of with high homicide rates. One area to take a look is the FBI's Uniform Crime Report and the decline in homicide over the past 20 years is a good statistic. However, the same decline has not happened in major metropolitan areas, especially those where there is a large portion of the population that is disenfranchised. Poor social support, poor education, drugs, abuse, gangs, etc. all seem to be a recipe for increased gun violence. This trend holds true even in cities and states with some of the toughest gun control laws.

To take it a step further, in 2012 the US experienced its highest suicide rate among of military personnel. More were lost by their own hand last year than in the line of duty. Too me this is something we should be ashamed of. Our mental health services are that bad and so limited that thousands are not receiving the help they need.

In the US this is not just a "gun" problem, but it is a public health problem. Allocating millions to "study" the problem and to beef up school security is a band-aid. Time for everyone to wake up. Even if you have a registry with extended background checks, privacy laws prevent the release of medical information such as a mental illness diagnosis. Those are the people that have been the shooters. No one is addressing the root causes of violence. Yes, put more effective controls in place, but also deal with all of the parts of the problem.

Deb, If I could I would like it a trillion times. US rules are ridiculous, the very root is mental illness.

Yes I realize there are extreme cases of violent people and groups who choose their path. They are usually tracked by their criminal records.

In the last 3 months, 527 shootings here. 3 a couple days ago, one death and one likely to die. I am numb as our city does not support the police efforts. They could be monetarily gaining but don't have time to write speeding tickets. Let alone chase down the gang element. The City pulled the gang enforcement.

We have a huge Community Health System run by a poorly administered bunch of Republicans. JMHO!

The systems in the US are put in place "to make us feel safe". The populace buys it, when in fact it is all political mind games.

All at the expense of the citizens and tax payers. No matter how they write the gun laws, people kill not guns! I quit watching Fear mongering big News media.

My anxiety has reduced!
