Appropriate Chinese New Year Presents

My Taiwanese friend brought me a bouquet of plum blossoms and she said it is traditional. :)

There're gifts??!? All we ever got as kids was money in red envelopes!! LOL!

I would go with food. We love food. Is there an asian grocery store nearby? They often have nice gift baskets of a selection of candies or fruit. Mandarin oranges are big because they symbols of good fortune (they're name in Chinese sounds the same as gold).

The red envelopes are "lucky" money.

I guess my question would be is the recipient Chinese?

She also brought me a bag of goldfish and told me to eat all but one for good luck.

Ack... I like gold fish and I like sushi, but I don't know that I'd be able to eat all but one even for good luck. New one on me, but not particularly surprised.

@The Albatross - Lucky red envelopes usually go to children and younger single adults. They are given in other times like birthdays, weddings.

Yeah I know too that for seniors or elderly age that gifts that are health enhancing are good for this holiday. Not sure about peers and Spock didn't say the age of the recipient.
