I am artistic - especially with life-like drawing (graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, oil pastels, scratchboard, you-name-it). However, I sadly haven't done art in years. I'm currently in medical school, and most of the projects which I would love to do are time-consuming - I'm kindof a detail-freak, perfectionist. But at the same time I would love to do some simple projects just to 1) have an outlet, 2) get some creative juices flowing, and 3) I think it would help me in processing though my trauma. However, when I try to think about where to begin, I get overwhelmed. I did buy a small night stand and sanded/painted that, and I have done things like trying to add color and redecorate my room. It's been nice just to do SOMETHING, but I guess I'm asking - Do you have any suggestions?

Has anyone else who is either limited by time and/or tired mentally/emotionally found outlets that are helpful? Thanks so much for any replies. I'm so thankful that I found this forum!

Allisonp, I found making collages revealing. Tearing out pictures or word from magazines and catalogs can be done over time as you find yourself responding to something. You don't have to understand where it fits. Once you have enough stuff then you can begin to see which image belongs to which other image. I used tape on the back. Sometimes I tore the pictures out, sometimes I cut them out carefully. You find what works for you.

I am an iconographer. I paint in the traditional form with traditional materials. Icons are part of the Christian tradition though it took 700 years for the Theological understanding to be worked out.

I work on specially formed boards which have be covered with 15 to 20 layers of homemade gesso. Gesso is the base on which icons are usually made. Egg tempra is the method. We mix raw ground pigment with egg yolk as the binder.

Each icon is different even if I am trying hard to re-present a well loved icon. That's what keeps the tradition alive.. The oldest known icon is of St. Peter at St. Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai. It is made from an encaustic technique using colored wax.

I've always felt quite an 'arty' person.

My main artistic hobby is playing the guitar, but I also draw a bit as well. I used to write poetry, but it's not really a talent of mine, I used it mainly to blow off steam. I've written short stories too, I even started a 'novel' once (haha, well I thought it was good as a 13 year old!) but I've always gone back to music.

I dance, spin fire, play ukulele, sing, act, write sci-fi/fantasy and design makeup.

How cool, Sebastion. Good to have you along for the journey.

I am an icon maker. I write poems especially Haiku. I quilt and am getting better.

Icons are Liturgical art in the Orthodox Christian Tradition. I use the traditional egg tempra materials established in the 700's.

I drew pictures on the walls around my crib with cold cream when I was 2 1/2 years old. I had not even learned to speak yet, because I'm dyslexic. Daddy said it took 8 coats of paint to cover it.

I went to Art College, showed in galleries around the country and I do Art Therapy these days now that I am retired. My Therapist is very much happy that I am doing this.

You can view my art therapies on my Trauma Diary:

Sheila, please be very careful not to cross into self-promotion... as you're now skirting a fine line with mentioning of professional works; as your account will obtain action that may limit your ability to participate here.
